Yellow shield downloading problem
I appreciate any help/ advice some one might be able to give
In the bottom right hand area of my computer screen (where the time and connection speed icons are) a new icon has appeared. It is a yellow shield. Unlike the other icons in this area I cannot right click on it to get an explanation of what it is - I think this is a point of difference and why I suspect this shield may be some kind of malware . When I run my mouse over it, it says it is downloading updates . Ive got broadband and the updates it claims its downloading must be massive cos its still on 4 % after half an hour . Please can any one tell me if this is some kind of malware or a genuine piece of software for my computer |

Re: Yellow shield downloading problem
Hi and welcome.
What OS are you running? Do you have Automatic Updates (assuming your OS supports this) turned on? Have you ever seen this icon before? Please provide as much information as you can.

You mean this yellow shield:

Re: Yellow shield downloading problem
To chime in here, people take care. I've seen the "Windows 2008/09 Antivirus" and the its like populate the tray with a similar icon. So if you see this icon with a "windows" notification of virus infection you are more than likely infected.

Re: Yellow shield downloading problem
My thoughts exactly - which is why I asked a few questions to start with, although the answer was most likely to be Windows Update. Malware authors are very clever when it comes to creating icons and messages that look identical to genuine Windows components. One only has to look at the number of people duped into typing their details into what appears to be a legit banking website.
