Basic Protection?

I have been reading and learning and I will continue... however can someone please let me know if I have good basic protection on my new computer?

I have read where there is no perfect security products, but I have installed malwarebytes and McAfee. Is this as good of a combo as any or should I do something different?

I'm also using Firefox and Safari as opposed to IE. And I am now familiar with the threats of pUp's as my children did have one on my last computer, although they didn't use it for a long time so I don't think that was my problem. However I won't take my chances in the future... so Thank you for everything I am already learning from this forum!

BTW... once I receive my old computer back and someone tries to assist me whether it works or not... I will be making a donation to this forum in support of the time all you guys and girls spend trying to help others. Thank you!!!

Have you read the FAQ here?

Re: Basic Protection?

Thanks for the response.

Yes, that is why I installed McAfee and Malwarebytes. I have an existing paid subscription with McAfee and I liked the results I think I got from Malwarebytes on my last computer just before it crashed. So if I'm reading that faq correctly besides common sense I'm reading you need a virus protector and an adware/malware scanner... Am I reading this right? And is Malwarebytes ok? I know it wasn't mentioned in that FAQ, but I believe that was written in 2006? And I have read somewhere else on here that it was recommended by someone here and no one has said anything bad about it that I have found so far. So I just want to make sure it's ok and I'm understanding properly.

Re: Basic Protection?

Make sure you update all of your software especially McAfee.
Also, what firewall are you using?
I am going to assume you have Windows XP Firewall which is good but does not monitor outgoing traffic.
Read the FAQ as given above for other firewall.
I use the Windows Xp Firewall and no big problems.
Scan and update once a week and you should be OK!

Hope this helped!

Re: Basic Protection?

Malwarebytes is very good even though I use Spybot.
You can have both too.

Re: Basic Protection?

Oh yeah, McAfee installs a firewall as well as my routers Firewall.

So AV, adware scanner, firewall, common sense, no pup's, and Firefox

I'll re read to see if I'm missing anything else?

That seems quite adequate.
