Hi all,
I've been using AVG 7.5 (free) and now planning on using the 8.0 version. I'd like to know what issues people have had with 8.0 as the reviews online seem to be mixed. Some say the new web scanning feature slows their system, and there seems to be some false positives in the virus detection while others seem very happy with it. (I've also read people having issues with the installation/upgrade process??).
I'm using Avira at the moment, but I'd like more info on the AVG 8.0 before installing it.

Your input would be greatly appreciated.

AVG 8 free vs AVG 7.5 free:
Pros... You can schedule AVG 8 to do a complete scan once a week rather than every day. AVG 8 has antispyware protection which they acquired through the purchase of Ewido Micro systems. AVG 8 has Link Scanner that will check your search results to see if the site is who they claim to be. Link Scanner can be turned off.

Cons... The auto update feature appears to run (almost too) frequently. AVG Toolbar, which offers Safe Surfing, impacts your internet speed. Support for AVG 8 free users is limited to a forum that offers little help even though the solution may be available to registered users.

Recently, AVG has been targeted by Antivirus 2009 and its many other aliases. This program flashes a false ad on your desktop hoping to panic you into buying a non-existent protection package. In December, a variant showed up that messes with your registry and prevents AVG from working. It also blocks attempts to repair or reinstall. I believe AVG has taken a more serious approach to this invasion which, up to now, was considered only a nuisance.
On the whole, AVG appears to be a very good free package and worthy of possible purchase later. If they want to compete, they will need to lower their price. They are currently ranked number 4 by TopTen Reviews and are more expensive than the higher ranked programs.
Regardless of what you use, a proper cleanup regimen and a little common sense and discipline in your internet use is always the best tool. Music ripping and blind clicking carry a heavy price.

I've used AVG 8 with no problems (and numerous other versions before that).

No problems with installation or with the linkscanner. I would suggest you say no to the toolbar - you don't need it. No problems with autoupdate either. I run a scan every fortnight.

AVG have false positives, as do all the AV companies. Have a look here for comparison details

been using avg for a few years now. I don't have any trouble with it. scans seem to take a long time with version 8. other than that its a great all around antivirus.
