slow and can't access task mngr or control panel
Hi,
I just posted about my computer being slow, after I posted I tried to download a few of your suggested programs. It is worse now than ever I downloaded autostream and startuplite and avast. The alt control delete doesn't even work and when I went into the control panel and was going to delete all of these, I couldn't even get into it, it just set idle. I don't even know how I am able to get onto the internet to post this message. Please help. Thank you and God bless, Kim Morris |

Re: slow and can't access task mngr or control panel
Hello -
As indicated in the sticky at the top of this forum If you think your computer is infected.... Follow the steps we've outlined here: NEW INSTRUCTIONS - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help Do not post logs back here. If it's too badly damaged, sometimes a repair install/non-destructive recovery, or a format and reinstall/destructive recovery is the best/most efficient way to get a machine working well again. If you need help with that, you may want to ask for help in our Windows XP support forum. The staff and members in that area will be better able to assist you with that.

Re: slow and can't access task mngr or control panel
When I finally was able to delete the avast program, everything started to work normally again. I had to go through scotty the dog on protrol to delete the program. I now need to know what virus program to use that would not do this to my computer. I have an old system with a ram of 512 mb. but space of 71.8 gb. Do you have any suggestions? I don't know why that program did that.
Thank you, Kim Morris |

Re: slow and can't access task mngr or control panel
Hi Kim -
Those symptoms don't seem to me to be anything a healthy machine would do, and Avast is a well known, respected product. Perhaps you should have the machine checked out for infection. That said, I use Avira AntiVir Personal on some of my machines. It's free, and seems to be relatively light on resource use. 512MB is a bare minimum for Windows XP in 2009, as so many new applications use more and more memory. What might have been a lot of memory when the machine was new, no longer is. 1GB is better for XP, more is better still. It's a very simple upgrade that most anyone can take care of. You can visit Crucial where you can either input your model number or download a small application that will tell you exactly the type of RAM you need.
