Re: Whats a good pop up blocker?

I used to use panicware popup stopper. It stopped all of them it was so good, it was one of the few utilities that I actually paid for even though they had a free version.

I now use firefox browser for surfing the web and it will also stop all popups. In addition you can add ad blockers and flashblocks.

Do you need any advice on using search engines? Google panicware popup stopper and it's the first result: http://www.panicware.com/

As sobeit says, if you're using Firefox you should never see any popups. I haven't seen one in years, and that's without any 3rd party blockers or addons.

Re: Whats a good pop up blocker?

Popups, from a security point of view, are unwanted browser windows that open when you click on something or visit a dodgy site. They usually contain adverts or undesirable web pages.

This is different to new windows that are designed to open when you click something, which is a feature that can be toggled in Firefox.

Is Firefox setup to use tabs or new windows?

Tools > Options > Tabs tab > Open links that open in a new window in:
The options are 'new window', 'new tab' or 'current tab'. If it's set to 'new window', change to one of the other two. I have mine set to 'new tab'.

Please post an example website that gives you popups, and say what you click on to bring up a popup window.

Just tried that site and clicked on 'Bioshock' - no popups for me - using Firefox. I'm with koala, haven't seen a popup in years - and I don't have a special add-on or plug-in.

Re: Whats a good pop up blocker?

I use FireFox with the AdBlockPlus add-on. Works a treat - and I can block frames, ads and images with a few clicks.

Re: Whats a good pop up blocker?

I've been using Firefox for a while now and after reading this thread decided to install the AdBlockPlus add-in. I then tested with a site that always gave me a popup (mlb.com) and I no longer received the popup.

Great advice. Thanks.
