Possible pop-up problems due to CoolWWWSearch. Need some help.

New to the forum, but a short amount of browsing made me confident there are people here with smart answers who could help. I am running Windows 98 and using Spybot S&D for adware protection. I am having constant pop-up problems and slow performance. When I run Spybot, the CoolWWWSearch files detected are as follows:

.Bootconf
.Loadbat
.Msconfd
.Oslogo
.Tapicfg
.Xmlmimefilter

When I attempt to fix the problems by deleting them in Spybot, I get this error message:

Datei "C:/WINDOWS/hosts" kann nicht erstellt werden. The process cannpt access the file because it is being used by another process.

I think part of that is in German, and besides the computer problems, I know that ain't good! I am new to forums like this and the technicalities of deleting something like this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try booting in Safe Mode and then run spybot...
During the system start up it is probably loading the program that is using the files you are trying to get rid of.

Also consider downloading and running AdAware.

Please let us know if this resolves the issue or if you need further assistance.

This is one of the newer versions, and Spybot may not get it, yet.

Download CWShredder and click on 'Fix' (it will automatically fix anything it finds for you). If it asks if you want to delete a certain random file, choose No and post that filename here.

If you are satisfied with the results, it all good. If not...

Please download HijackThis - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Double click on the program to run it.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Get HijackThis Analyzer and save it to the same folder as the hijackthis.log file. Run HijackThis Analyzer and type in y if you agree. Open up the result.txt file created. Copy the whole result.txt log and post it here. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.
