Malicious Spyware
My wife received an email, supposedly from PayPal, asking for verification of the purchase of a Dell computer. We had not purchased anything with PayPal in over a year, and she never has had a PayPal account. When she used the indicated link, the site did not allow her to do anything. I am concerned she may have been led to the site so that some malicious spyware could be downloaded onto our computer. I am considering buying a data/file wiping program to clean the whole hard drive to rid it of any unwanted software. Does that make sense and if I do, is it possible that any malicious code could hide in Windows XP, or do I have to wipe off Windows as well and reload it?

Re: Malicious Spyware
Hi
It is possible that something malicious could have been downloaded silently. If you are worried, you could start here http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...ml#post1771806 Do not post your logs back in this thread - follow the guidance in the above link! Please note that the Security Forum is always busy, so I would ask for your patience while waiting for a reply - it may take a few days. If you want to go down the other route, i.e. wipe the hard disk and start again, then I would certainly recommend re-installing Windows. Malware can hide in many places, including Windows system files. A good utility to completely wipe a hard disk can be found here http://www.dban.org/ If you are unsure about anything regarding the wipe and re-install post in the XP Forum.

Its probably not malware but sounds like maybe a phishing, carding fraud scam. It's a possibility that it could be a ''infected URL'' but it sounds a lot like a phishing scam, set up to steal paypal credentials And btw Phishers are Scam fraud methods, used to decieve people on fooling them into believing a login page, is legit, when it's set up to steal account information. I know a lot of Skids who use phisher notes.... which are phishers of many types of scams, using botnets, to send/relay out to a wide range of EMAIL ADDRESS's trying to score people accounts, or money. |
