windows Xp Pro on Sony Vaio laptop can't type in password to login

I am currently on holiday in Thailand (so I can't just go and hand my laptop in to be fixed somewhere) I have heaps of new photos I don't want to lose! I started up my computer all worked ok went online I then got a "critical message saying my microtrend spyware was out of date and needed updating" the anti virus I am running is Threat fire free edition. I minimised this message as I have had it before and opened a file on the desktop to view some photos then a prompt came up saying something about finish installing yahoo toolbar I closed this message and continued with photos then all of a sudden computer restarted and since then I can't type my password in to login to my computer. The mouse works and I can click on hint and restart computer etc until I touch any key then mouse is frozen and all I can do is use the power button to turn off. I have the same problem in safemode and have tried all other options in the menu that contains safemode all with the same problem once I try to type the password nothing comes up and mouse is frozen. Is there any thing I can try to fix this and if not do you think its possible to retrieve the data from my hard drive at a later date. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!Thankyou!
