Hello TSF,

A friend of mine called me up and told me she thinks her computer is malfunctioning. Ok I go over there, no security at all, Dont worry I slapped her hand for that one. Seems she has been this way for a while, you know some people dont need a computer. LOL

Anyways, its an HP DeskTop, Windows XP with Comcast HighSpeed connection.

Ok I went to Add/remove programs, removed the limewire, and some junk she had in there, still did not free up enough space for me to install AVG or any programs to clean the system with, do you have any suggestions on how I should approach this? Maybe a walk thru on what I should do first?

I truly believe the system is corrupted, and I am trying to save it for her daughters sake, she needs this system for school.

windows has a feature called disk cleanup: click on start - all programs - accessories - system tools. Run it and it will get rid of most temporary files on the system. Then empty the recycle bin. It should free up enough space to install avg.

The bigger problem is, if there is barely enough space to install avg, then theres barely enough to run the computer efficiently. Its usually best to give the computer working space for temporary files, page system, virtual memory and such so about 10-20 (depending upon the drive size) percent of the c drive needs to be always free .

Ok after I do the disk clean, should I immediately install the AVG or do you suggest other steps first. your input is very much appreciated. I am just taking baby steps over here, and when I do create enough space should I do a Hijack this for you to review before the cleaning process.

you should have enough space for hijackthis. Its a very, very small utility.

Go ahead and run the disk cleanup. Then run avg, if it finds nasties, go ahead and clean them up.

If you want you need to follow this forums five step plan for getting rid of nasties to make sure the computer is clean.
