command prompt blocking everything

Hi, i seem to have a problem where i cant open any programs or system properties because a command prompt comes up that lasts for less than a second to stop the program. i cant access cmd prpt because it goes away in the same way. i saw a thread here where someone seemed to have the same problem except they solved it by accessing regedit but i cant even do that. i can also download things but i cant install or run them and i dont have hijack this or any similar program. please help.

Sounds like the problem may be malware related. It would be a good idea to run an anti-virus and anti-spyware scan to see if it comes up with anything.

i wish i could run an anti virus but the cmd prompt flickers when i try like any other program. i dont have a spyware removal program on the computer and i cant install any because that also gets blocked by the cmd flicker. ive tried free scans from the internet but the only one that worked was the kaspersky one and it only found some old cracks i still had wich i deleted but the problem is still there.

Hi, if you have your vista dvd then boot from it (may have to set first boot device cdrom in bios) Let it run and agree to the language you use then select the repair option. From here select "command prompt" at the X sources prompt type c: press enter
C:>
C:> cd windows press enter
C: windows>
C: windows>cd system32 press enter
C: windows\system32
C: windows\system32>regedit.exe press enter

This gives you regeditor now you can apply the reg fix from the post you mentioned. When finished select Restart.

i tried following the 5 step program but i dont have any of the programs in the first list, the panda scan didnt find anything it could disinfect, i cant install any of the protection programs, and i cant even open computer properties. so the 5 step didnt work and all i got was the log from panda wich has a few things but none that could be disinfected.

Try to boot into SAFEMODE - select the command prompt option. Tap the F8 key repeatedly during boot-up. Use the don-arrow key to make the selection.

When you're in normal mode or safe mode, are you able to access the 'Run' box? If you can, try pasting the following into it:
%systemroot%\system32\rstrui.exe

That should start system restore and you may be able to restore the system to a previous date. If you can do that, you should be able to follow the 5 Step Process then.

Hi, did you try my suggestion YOU will need to access a copy of Vista to do it though, any copy will do boot from the cd rom drive with the Vista DVD in the drive go through the language setup and then select the "repair" option. From here select "command Prompt" then either use the regedit to fix or you can run the system restore command posted by Nickster. I am afraid this may be your only way out of this.

i tried what you said but the regedit fix didnt work because it still got blocked; however i was able to do something. i think out of desperation i kept runing programs and trying to catch the words in the flickering cmd propmt and it said the location of where it was runing on the top. somehoe it was in a folder that held my ziped files so i decided to just delete the entire folder. i lost a few things but the main thing is that the cmd flickers stoped so i was able to run programs but now my problem is that every time i try to run a program i have to select the the program to run it with in the "open with" window. this means i have to search for the exe everytime i want to run something. i tried runung system restore again but none of my previous restore points work. i think the virus/spyware broke them somehow cause no matter how far i try to go back they all give me a corrupted error. the 5 step process was my next attempt but everytime i try to install the programs the "open with" window apears so i have to find the instalation exe and after the instalation i cant run the program cause it tries to instal again. none of my programs have their own icons they all have the blank page looking icon even after i choose in the "open with" window. i think the windows process that opens programs is missing cause for example if i run media player i choose wmplayer.exe and it opens but i get a window telling me media player does not recognize the extension .exe so im lost.

ok well i did what you said but when it finished mergin it gave me this error messeage.

Cannot import C:\users\AngryWhisper\Desktop\exefix.reg: Not all data was seccessfully written to the registry some keys are open by the system or other processes.

I also rebooted my computer like you said but nothing changed.

Hi, thats ok nothing has gone into the registry Vista does not like it.Further research has revealed an alternative fix. Do exactly the same with this reg file (ie copy paste notepad save to desktop save as whatever you like JUST make sure it has a .Reg extension Copy this:-

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.exe\OpenWithList]

miguelcn3 Registered User Join Date: Sep 2008 Posts: 10 OS: vista	command prompt blocking everything Hi, i seem to have a problem where i cant open any programs or system properties because a command prompt comes up that lasts for less than a second to stop the program. i cant access cmd prpt because it goes away in the same way. i saw a thread here where someone seemed to have the same problem except they solved it by accessing regedit but i cant even do that. i can also download things but i cant install or run them and i dont have hijack this or any similar program. please help.

miguelcn3 Registered User Join Date: Sep 2008 Posts: 10 OS: vista	Re: command prompt blocking everything i wish i could run an anti virus but the cmd prompt flickers when i try like any other program. i dont have a spyware removal program on the computer and i cant install any because that also gets blocked by the cmd flicker. ive tried free scans from the internet but the only one that worked was the kaspersky one and it only found some old cracks i still had wich i deleted but the problem is still there.

From here select "command prompt" at the X sources prompt type c: press enter C:> C:> cd windows press enter C: windows> C: windows>cd system32 press enter C: windows\system32 C: windows\system32>regedit.exe press enter This gives you regeditor now you can apply the reg fix from the post you mentioned. When finished select Restart.

If you can, try pasting the following into it: %systemroot%\system32\rstrui.exe That should start system restore and you may be able to restore the system to a previous date. jenae Mentor Hardware Team Join Date: Jun 2008 Posts: 1,304 OS: XP & Vista	Re: command prompt blocking everything Hi, did you try my suggestion YOU will need to access a copy of Vista to do it though, any copy will do boot from the cd rom drive with the Vista DVD in the drive go through the language setup and then select the "repair" option. From here select "command Prompt" then either use the regedit to fix or you can run the system restore command posted by Nickster. I am afraid this may be your only way out of this.

miguelcn3 Registered User Join Date: Sep 2008 Posts: 10 OS: vista	Re: command prompt blocking everything i tried what you said but the regedit fix didnt work because it still got blocked; however i was able to do something. i think out of desperation i kept runing programs and trying to catch the words in the flickering cmd propmt and it said the location of where it was runing on the top. somehoe it was in a folder that held my ziped files so i decided to just delete the entire folder. i lost a few things but the main thing is that the cmd flickers stoped so i was able to run programs but now my problem is that every time i try to run a program i have to select the the program to run it with in the "open with" window. this means i have to search for the exe everytime i want to run something. i tried runung system restore again but none of my previous restore points work. i think the virus/spyware broke them somehow cause no matter how far i try to go back they all give me a corrupted error. the 5 step process was my next attempt but everytime i try to install the programs the "open with" window apears so i have to find the instalation exe and after the instalation i cant run the program cause it tries to instal again. none of my programs have their own icons they all have the blank page looking icon even after i choose in the "open with" window. i think the windows process that opens programs is missing cause for example if i run media player i choose wmplayer.exe and it opens but i get a window telling me media player does not recognize the extension .exe so im lost. P.S. thanks for all the help and sorry for the length...
