Strange problem with SecureExpertCleaner
Two computers, one desktop and one laptop, both running Windows XP SP3 and Norton AntiVirus 2008 with current updates.
Visit novationmusic.com and install latest version of their support software for their Remote Zero SL product. Installs without trouble on desktop machine. Go to laptop machine and try to install the same software. Norton AntiVirums refuses, claiming that the file contains SecureExpertCleaner malware. This is the same file that Norton accepted on the desktop machine. So I wonder if somehow this app installer, which comes from a reputable manufacturer, included this malware that somehow snuck past Norton on one machine but not another. I look at the removal instructions for SecureExpertCleaner. I can't find any of the files or registry keys associated with SecureExpertCleaner on either machine. Any idea what might be going on? |

Re: Strange problem with SecureExpertCleaner
Curiouser and curiouser.
I restarted the laptop machine and waited patiently to be sure that Norton was running again. Tried again to run the Novation installer that Norton had flagged before and it worked this time without a hitch. So either last time was a false alarm (I now realize that I had removed an old version of Photoshop without restarting the machine, and also updated the current version), or this time was a false negative and both of my machines are now infected. As I can find no evidence of infection or other strange behavior, I suspect the former. Nevertheless, I'd appreciate hearing about relevant experiences from others on this forum. |
