Virus survived after applying ghost image

Hello, everyone. One of my friends' computer was infected by virus. To be more accurate, it's his son's computer. At first, I thought XP installation CD can solve all the problem. Then I found the XP installation CD couldn't even recognize the hard drive at all. Well, I uninstalled the hard drive and put it on a different computer. I applied ghost image and thought now the problem should be gone. Well, I installed the hard drive back and reboot the computer. This time it seemed the computer found the hard drive but could not reboot correctly. I was given the choice to start in safe mood or normal mood. However, after I made the choice, I got error messages which indicated that the hard drive was corrupted again.

At first, I thought the virus got into BIOS. However, some of my friends disagreed, saying it's almost impossible to infect BIOS. So could someone please tell me whether ghost image could clean the boot section of hard drive? If the answer is yes, can I draw the conclusion that the only place for the virus to hide is at BIOS?

Thanks a lot.

if the boot sector is wrong on your hdd you can not start it up, you need to use some kind of partition software.
