Trouble with Ad-Aware
I used an old version of FREE Ad-Aware for some time. It stopped working---always told me that server was too busy for updates/scanning. Updated to FREE AdAware 2007, and all was well for awhile. Then the same "server busy" problem came back. So I updated to FREE ADAware 2008. It is impossible to use: Server busy is still a problem. AND if you are lucky enough to get through it will not update the data incrementally, only an entire download PLUS a scan takes forever---I have never finished one even though my setting is for "smart" scan. Also I get a message that my virtual memory is too low (I know what that means).
In this connection it should be noted that my computer is somewhat old. It only has a 30GB hard drive, and 250MB of RAM. Worse yet is I use a dial-up line, and for certain reasons cannot change. My OS is Windows XP Home SP2. What other spyware program would suit my needs? And how would I get it SAFELY. Any help would be appreciated. |

Re: Trouble with Ad-Aware
welcome to TSF
you need to make alot of concessions because of the factors surrounding your situation. you have an old, undersized, slow-connected computer. i had dial-up and updating adaware took forever, once they dropped asdaware se. there is also superantispyware and spybot available for you. i don't have a link for you. maybe someone will come along and help with that. if you go out searching for these programmes, make absolutely sure that you find the legitimate programmes. don't download and install a rogue programme. our members do that way too often. i would uninstall and remove whatever unused programmes, applications and services you have on your computer. here's an authority on legitimate programmes. www.spywarewarrior.com |

Links are in this topic, which would be a good read for MATHGUY.
PC Safety and Security--What Do I Need? I agree with ejames82, you're going to run into difficulties with modern applications on that rig.
