Spyware problem?

I have a laptop with what I believe is a spyware issue. I say this because I have scanned it for viruses but found none. The laptop had Spy Maxx installed on it. I went through and deleted as much as I could find but a problem still persists.

I can go to the Internet and surf but if I try to update my antivirus (Symantec) is can't because it says it can't get online. If I try to do Microsoft updates it allows me to go to the page but when I try to update the page can't be found. Lastly I installed Spybot, and before you can run it you need to update it. Once again updates are not allowed.

Suggestions?

Someone suggested the Vista antivirus 2008 but I've found no traces of it.

Can anyone help?

Re: Spyware problem?

Hello and welcome to TSF
Please read this sticky: If you think your computer is infected....

Be sure to reach Step 5. If you cannot complete any of the 5 steps for whatever reason, just continue on with the next one until they are all completed, and post your logs in The HJT Help Forum; where an Analyst will assist you. However, it is very important to make mention of any of the steps that you were not able to complete.

After you’ve posted your logs, please be patient, as the Security Team Analysts are very busy.
