Recommended anti-virus programs (need opinions)

Hi,

My computer just got hit by a virus and I am resorting to reformat my HDD.

I use to be a norton user, but after some dissapointments, I switched to panda security (but only limited to the free online scanner). Now I am thinking of investing in another (paid) antivirus and I am considering kapersky.

I hope some of you have answers to my following questions:-

1) Is kapersky good? Does it update frequently to "keep up with times"?

2) Are there any other recommendations for antivirus products(free or paid-for)?

3) Which anti-virus product have frequent, fast, and up-to-date updates from personal experience? Which is usually the first to get an update the moment a new virus batch comes out?

Hi

Paid versions will usually update before free versions. As to which is best, this article has some suggestions and links

Re: Recommended anti-virus programs (need opinions)

I have only used three retail versions of antivirus software, mcafees, nortons, and trend micro. The only one I will never use again is mcafees but its only because of their subscription policies - its expensive.

I am currently using nortons but after this subscription runs it course I will be going back to Trend Micro because I like the way their wireless protection works.

I would recommend either nortons or trend micros. However since you have your reasons for not using nortons then I would suggesst trying out Trend Micro's free trial.

As far as free antivirus - I will only use them to check out how they work for others or for temporary protection between subscriptions since they do not provide 100 percent security. Most have limitations when it comes to updates, protecting emails/attachments and scanning downloads. This is why in some cases retail antiviruses will use more resources. The more protection, the more computer resources it will use.

Re: Recommended anti-virus programs (need opinions)

I used Kaspersky for a year or so and never had any problems with my machine. Same good luck with Trend Micro. I didn't run Windows at all for a long time; recently reinstalled in in an old eMachines desktop for my gf. Put NOD32 in, as it seems to be getting rave reviews lately. So far, so good. NOD, btw, seems to update more often than I remember TM or Kaspersky updates. Any of those, IMHO, are good choices.

Avira (free) is doing a good job for me. I also like it because it's simple and almost invisible. Updates once a day (of course you can update manually too)

Its AVG paid for me. Updates everyday, sometimes twice a day. Memory usage is low, roughly 50MB. Friendly, easy to use. Direct. It scans website link to ensure what you r clicking is safe...

I am sure all the AV offer free version. Try it out to be sure and see which fits you best.
