Today AVG placed several items in my virus vault that are
"Trojan horse BackDoor.Generic9.ATPN" My computer now has NO ACCESS to anything external - no external drives (USB, DVD, CD), detects no modem, can't access the internet, can't System Restore, has no audio and displays in 16-bit. Having no external access, I can't access any 'fix it' downloads as I have no way of loading them on my computer (which, btw, isn't the one I am posting this from - because I can't :( I can access all my data - but of course can't do any 'damage control' backups because I have no where to backup it up to. Anyone got any ideas? I would so love some help - PLEASE |

Re: My computer has been taken over!~
Greetings BYOHorse, Welcome to TSF!
![]() It is recommend that you read this article… "Having problems with spyware and pop-ups? - First Steps"; follow the instructions very carefully; then, post all the requested logs and information; as instructed, in the HiJackThis Log Help Forum. (Simply, click on the coloured links to be re-directed.) Please ensure that you create a new thread in the HiJackThis Log Help Forum; not back here in this one. When carrying out The 5 Steps, if you cannot complete any of them for whatever reason, just continue on with the next one until they are all completed. However,it is extremely important to make mention of the fact that you could not complete any of the steps in your post to The HJT Help Forum; where an Analyst will assist you with other workarounds. Once done, please be patient, as the Security Team Analysts are usually very busy; one of them will answer your request as soon as they can. Good Luck with it. Kind Regards,

Re: My computer has been taken over!~
Hi BYOHorse -
You might want to try restoring whatever it was AVG quarantined. AVG has been prone to false positives lately. Without access to external sources, your best course of action would be to pull the hdd, slave it to another machine, and pull valued data from the hdd, if restoring from the Vault doesn't help. Following the 5 Steps won't really help you until you restore some sense of normalcy to the machine.

Re: My computer has been taken over!~
Thanks for the advice. I have very limited access to the 'net while I fix this problem but am getting on-line whenever I can (on someone elses machine) and appreciate your help. I was unable to get any stability from restoring the AVG files but was able to do a partial recovery from the factory CD to get DVD burner access without destroying my data - but still no internet access. Have managed to rescue anything I need that wasn't already backed-up; am now doing a full restore on the computer.
I keep telling myself it was probably time for a good clean-out anyway :) Thanks again Cheers Mandy |
