Alternative to Ad-aware?

Used to love Ad-Aware but not enamoured with downloading the new version after reading reports. My old version of the program 1.06 or something is barely functioning and won't update anymore. Plus it keeps crashing.

I still use Spybot S &D , but is there a good alternative to the Ad-aware of former times?

Thanks

Re: Alternative to Ad-aware?

adaware se was a great programme. adaware 2007 includes a check box in system config>services. the check box needs to be checked to update, then you have to reboot, or leave the box permanently checked (which i choose not to do). i do a big dance to cut down on services running, but i take advantage of these free programmes and have a good working computer. i take these precautions to avoid conflicts.
antivirus programmes of today scan for alot of spyware as well. when i had spy sweeper it conflicted with my kaspersky AV. i experienced slowdowns and error messages with freezes occasionally. when i unchecked spy sweeper from the system config>services, all the problems were solved. spy sweeper is a great scanner, but doesn't get along with kaspersky AV.
i suggest that you pause protection with your security programmes, until you solve the problem with crashing and functionality, but leave your real-time AV running.

Re: Alternative to Ad-aware?

G'day harrup,

My 10˘ worth about you issue is...
I too had the 'old' version of Ad-Aware, and beta tested the Ad-Aware™ 2007.
I found it to be too intrusive (in the beta stages anyway).
My solution was not to go with Ad-Aware, and replaced it with SpyWare Terminator™; its a freeware program and operates very similar to Ad-Aware™.
Having said that, it is entirely up to personal preference.

Kind Regards,
