Question Solid Combo???

First of all id like to say a big HELLO to everyone on this forum.

Im new here an this is my first post although i have read alot of threads in the last few days, and everyone seems so friendly and helpful im loving it!!!

Anyway down to business,

Im going to perform a format and fresh install of windows soonishly and i have sussed out some "internet security" programs, just wondering if you all think they would work well together or if there are any known conflicts and what not. So far i have.....

Anti Virus: Avira AntiVir
Firewall: Sygate
Trojans: A-Squared
Adware: Ad-Aware 2007
Spyware: SpyBot : S&D

I also run SnoopFree Privacy Shield and of course the obligatory Hi-Jack This!

Also as abit of a time saver i tend to run the scans from most if not all programs at once, is this a big NO NO??? or is it rather safe to do so?

Looking forward to your replies

Aaron

Re: Solid Combo???

Hi Aaron, welcome to TSF

That list looks very comprehensive, you've got it all covered. There are some other things you could do like download a custom HOSTS file to block dubious websites (SpyBot has this feature as well), or switch to Firefox and install some security/privacy addons.

It's better to run scans one at a time. Not necessarily to avoid software conflicts, but having 2 programs accessing the hard drive at the same time will slow them both down.

If any of your security programs have the same feature (eg realtime background file scanning), then disable the feature in one of the programs to avoid slowdown.

Re: Solid Combo???

Thanks Koala,

Hmmm well that explains alot because im currently running Avast! and i don't like how resource hungry it seems to be, But this may be because of the background services running in SpyBot : S&D (thought id upload a screeny of my Task Manager for abit of a giggle).

Im already quite the fan of Firefox and have done abit of research into tweaking it, Now it seems as though il have to research these Security/Privacy add-ons

Thanks for the advice

Re: Solid Combo???

Your Task Manager screenshot shows that Avast is using alot of memory (all those ash*.exe files at the top). I use Avira Antivir which at the moment is using less than 8mb RAM compared to your 1.3gb.
