Format C vs. SDFix bla bla bla

Ok, I have read for about an hour to be sure I get this correct. My wife's Laptop has been infected with Trojandownloader.XS so badly that I cannot even use it to post here. I am on my PC trying to relay what I have found. I am by no mean a tech of any type so I am a little overwelmed with some of the instructions I have read on other posts with people that have the same problem. She is using Win XP and we are on a dial-up line. We are using Nortons and Spysweeper. I cannot download Hijackthis onto her computer to post its results to you. I have downloaded SDFix, ComboFix.exe and dss.exe onto a memory stick. I loaded the SDFix onto her desk top and ran it. I am looking at the report on Notpad now and am reluctant to type it into this message and maybe overlook something. I have saved it to the same memory stick but don't know how deliver it {HERE}. If I minimize the notepad her screen appears normal but without her wallpaper. Is it fixed enough to update her microsoft firewall and security updates and end this probmem. Lastly I have saved everything of any importance. Is worth while for me to just format the C drive, install the old Win 98 SE and then reinstall the Win XP Upgrade to get back to Square One. Will that eliminate any Infections in the laptop.

Re: Format C vs. SDFix bla bla bla

Hi and welcome to TSF.

It's not a good idea to run these tools without supervision....

However, SDFix will have helped to a degree. If you can download those tools to the laptop then you can do the same with HJT. You really need to posts whatever logs you have in a new thread in the HJT Forum to allow a trained analyst to help you. Do not try for any MS updates until your system is clean. Do not run any more tools unless asked to do so.

We can clean your system, but a reformat and re-install is always another option. It is up to you.
