Re: HELP! I screwed up my windows registry

Hi

Did you uninstall some of the other AVs or are they all still installed? How much RAM do you have at the moment? How much free disk space?

I use ERUNT & NTREGOPT.
ERUNT is a programme that will create automatic backups of your Registry. These backups can be used to help restore your system in the event of a serious crash.
NTREGOPT will compact and optimise your Registry, to assist the smooth running of your system.

Yes....both programs are excellent.
I use NTREGOPT myself and have for years.....BUT...
It only compresses (defragments) a registry....
It does NOT clean out the old, out-of-date and orphaned lines in the registry. The only SAFE program that I use and share with my hundreds of customers, to clean out a registry, is "Easy Cleaner 2". It works equally well for all versions of Windows.
If the program is going to 'error', it will only 'error' on the side of caution, maybe leaving some entry that "might" be removable. I've never seen it remove things needed by windows or any other installed program.
After a good cleaning, I've seen NTREGOPT reduce the size of a registry by as much as 30% (on my own PC, after removing Office 2007).

This greatly effects performance, because the windows registry is one of those things that MUST load into RAM during the boot up process.
The smaller and more organized it is, the better your computer will perform. (and the more free ram you'll have for your programs to use)

I have also tweaked my registry, to cause the Windows "kernel" to load into Ram memory on boot up. As windows runs, it's constantly accessing its 'kernel'. Having this badly needed info in RAM instead of on the much slower HD, greatly impacts performance.

I also run a little script from my Startup folder, on every boot, to force a new Registry Restore Point to be made, so I always have a fresh copy of my registry if I need it. (and I do...about once a week)
I also make Ghost Images of my HD on a 'several per week' basis, following a thorough drive cleaning.

"The only bad backup, is the one you decided NOT to make!"

Having a "Screaming Demon" for a computer instead of a "Lead Sled" is no simple chore. It requires proper setup and then regular maintenance to keep things clean and running at top performance.
This is my area of 'Specialty' and something I've done since the first day that Windows 95 entered my life....oh so many years ago now.

I've found that PC's with windows installed and never tweaked or tuned for best performance, will only run at about 30% efficiency.
NO-One would accept a car that ran that poorly, so why accept that kind of performance from your Computer?

Ok, now I'm ranting, again. Sorry!

Y'all have a great day now, Y'hear?

Re: HELP! I screwed up my windows registry

Well my specs are:

mercury pc pvm7
1.2gb ram ddr1
3oo gb free space
apart from windows updates
i have 32 programs installed
i'm using bitdefender total security 11
i'm using spyware doctor

I appreciate any help given.I'm not sure about ERUNT & NTREGOPT but i have tried Easy Cleaner 2 and so far so good but my registry is to severely damaged for the program and things like my desktop are almost dead, i'm barely keeping my comp alive and i've also tested for spyware/adware/rootkits and viruses it is purely my registry thats in a mess.
I'm an animationist and i have a passion for comps but this is the first time ive delt with a
screwed up registry. Any help will be greatly appreciated. THANX

Perhaps using System Restore might be your best bet.

Re: HELP! I screwed up my windows registry

hi

As any "good" security program, mcafee and avast delete the system restore files to prevent any virus stored there from blocking installation thus i can't system restore and my pops said if reinstall windows again he'll ban me from using it again so i gotta fix this manually. Microsoft recommended registry mechanic which fixed my desktop issue but not the rest. I also noticed that windows security center is no longer warning me about an uninstalled antivirus or firewall so now i now im in a pickle. Any help would be much appreciated

Re: HELP! I screwed up my windows registry

AVs don't delete System Restore - at least 'good' ones don't. If they did, everyone that ran a scan on a weekly basis would never be able to use SR, so I don't understand where you got that from. Unless you have the Registry already backed up, then there is not much you can do. You can't manually re-create it.

I've seen a lot of AVs delete infected files from the system restore cache and that breaks the SR chain making it unusable. I think that's what he's trying to say.

Try restoring your machine to the time before you installed the 24 antivirus programs.

It is possible that this is also not a registry issue. If you uninstalled those 24 programs properly, it is possible that it left out a lot of its files (especially norton & mcafee)
