Virus protection on a dell?(transfer from hardware)

I'm trying to decide what virus protection to use on my laptop, right now i use AVG free edition on my desktop, I used to pay like 100 bucks for spy sweeper and Norton, but neither program I found reliable, they were always over looking viruses and trojans, etc. I'm trying to decide what to put on this laptop I'm getting.

I like AVG because:
-First off its free
-It has both virus and spyware protection
-You can configure it so you never have to open it
-It runs in the background so it doesnt give you annoying messages like norton.

Before i put anything on this pc i want virus protection first. Im leaning toward AVG for the above reasons. If any one has any suggestions I'd love to hear them. I want to set this pc up right.

I also like AVG.

I can transfer this over to our security team if you would like to talk virus protection with them.

This section is more for hardware problems.

AVG is a fine choice for freeware. You'll likely get as many opinions as there are respondents.

wow thanks for that link, most of that is common sense, but there are some programs and ideas for security on there that i havent seen, I'm definitely going to try them out.
