Cannot download security program
I am trying to install an antivirus program on my computer and I get a "could not install" message. I tried 3 different ones. I get messages about not be able to open a file which usually has .exe in the message.
I have tried to download TUT to see if that would find the problem and could not download it either with a message "could not open ..........exe file" I don't know what to do if I can't download anything to try to help to locate the problem. My internet works; I can install a computer game from a CD. What can i DO? |

Re: Cannot download security program
Sounds like a possible bagle variant, which terminates many security applications. Exact error message would be helpful.
See if you can perform the steps outlined here: Please do this: Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
What DSS will do:

Re: Cannot download security program
OK I followed your directions (thank you) and I pasted everything to Hijack This Forum. I assume now I just keep checking back to see if anyone responds to it with suggestions?

Re: Cannot download security program
To Grumpy
My computer came with Norton installed. I followed the Norton uninstaller and then added McAfee that comes with Comcast Cable. It worked for a year and then stopped working after I used Registry Repair. The files were still on my computer, but the program could not be activated. McAfee had me uninstall their program and then tried to reinstall it and could not. After an hour they told me it was my computer, not the McAfee program. And that's where I am now. I tried to install AVG--program installed but could not be activated. Then I tried Etrust--could not install. Now, I first want to know how to get all these programs off my computer. None of them are active. None of them show up in my Add and Remove Programs list, but I just know that files are still on my computer and I would like to get them off. |

Re: Cannot download security program
Hi.
It would be best to wait until you get a reply to your hijack this log and an analyst will tell you how to completely remove anything that you don't need. A lot of security programmes are hard to remove completely and the analyst will know the best way to do it without removing anything you do need.
