Confused Add on pack for Norton Internet Security missing stuff

I upgraded to Norton Internet Security 2008 and installed the ad on pack.

Where is the ability to temporarily block internet traffic, and what happened to the popup and ad blocker?

An Internet Security package is useless without a popup blocker and ad blocker.

Re: Add on pack for Norton Internet Security missing stuff

Thanks ejames82.

I uninstalled and reinstalled 4 times. Then redownloaded the program and installed again. Still missing the popup blocker, ads blocker, and still can't halt all internet with a click.

Getting no help from Norton tech at all. Thay messed up my system and totally dropped me and will not even answer my emails.

Re: Add on pack for Norton Internet Security missing stuff

i didn't think reinstall would help, but it's the obvious solution, and wishful thinking.
make absolutely certain that remnants from other antivirus programmes have been removed, also real-time antispyware programmes can conflict with AV's.
maybe your firewall is blocking files. i don't like to recommend shutting down your firewall, but you have to weigh the pluses and subtract the minuses.
i have heard many horror stories about symantec's support. many people have problems with their programmes. i think you want to keep it in the back of your mind to use the symantec removal tool and install something like AVG.

Re: Add on pack for Norton Internet Security missing stuff

Hi Husky,

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team responding to your post. The symptoms you are describing do indeed point to a corrupt installation of Norton Internet Security 2008. The easiest way to resolve this problem is to follow the steps below to properly remove all Norton products from your computer, and to then do a fresh installation.

1. Click on the following link to download the Norton Removal Tool:

Norton Removal Tool and Instructions

2. After you run the tool, please restart your computer. Then log in to Windows again and run the removal tool again. Restart your computer after it is finished running the second time as well.

3. Make sure that your internet connection is working properly, and then reinstall Norton Internet Security. Towards the end of the installation process, the LiveUpdate feature will automatically run and download and install updates to both the program files and definition files.

4. The next step would be to re-download the add-on pack by clicking on the following link, and make sure that you click the radio button next to "Norton Internet Security 2008," to download the correct version.

Norton Add-On Pack for Norton Internet Security]

4. When the installation of the add-on pack is complete, please manually run LiveUpdate to make sure that all of the updates are downloaded and applied. To do so, Click Start-> All Programs->Norton Internet Security->LiveUpdate. LiveUpdate will run again and download and install any additional updates that are available. When this is complete, close the LiveUpdate window by clicking the "Finish" button.

To access the Parental Controls and Anti-Spam feature, launch Norton Internet Security, click on the "Norton Add-on Pack" tab at the top of the window.

1. To access the Anti-Spam feature of Norton Internet Security 2008, click on the arrow next to "Settings," and then click on the "Norton Anti-Spam link to access it's settings.

2. Then, click on the "Configure" button to configure the settings for the anti-spam feature.

I hope that this resolves your problems with Norton Internet Security 2008. Please reply back to this thread and let me know if your issue is now resolved.

Thanks,
Mike

Mike,

This doesn't have anything to do with corruption, I am just replying to your note so that you will contact me.

I have stayed with Norton Int. Security 2007 because of the "ad blocking" only. I want to try some better rated and faster running products for virus protection and firewall function, but haven't for one reason only - ad blocking.

So, what did Symantec just do? Everything was working perfectly and all of a sudden the ad blocking quit working on both my Vista and XP machines? Some update killed the add-on pack function. If Symantec has decided to kill the ad blocking function for 2007, and won't bring it back for 2008 versions on, there is absolutely no reason to stick with Symantec any more. After 12 years using your products that is a shame that the ad blocking function was not valued for what it was - a great function.

Let me know why Symantec decided to kill this function and if they will not reactivate it on my 2007 Internet Sec. add-on pack, let me know so I can try out some other products like Kaspersky.

Thanks, Mark

Hello Mark,

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team.

Because both Internet Explorer, Firefox and other modern web browsers already contain a pop-up blocking feature, Symantec has decided to remove this feature set from it's products.

Norton Add-on Pack and pop-up blocker

Thank you,

Mike

Re: Add on pack for Norton Internet Security missing stuff

Thanks Mike. Unfortunately Symantec got it all wrong. That add-on pack was not about pop up add or banner blocking. It was about "ALL" add blocking. The news sites I go to put 20 some adds on each side of the article. And they put adds inside the article too.

The add-on pack blocked "ALL" these adds that slowed down my system. I don't understand why Symantec didn't get that part of it? Anyway, I finally got fed up when this add-on pack quit working on my 2007 Norton (I stayed with this older program just because of the add blocking) and I did some internet research and found "Quero". It does all the add blocking (on the sides and buried in the article) that the add-on pack used to do.

Now that that one feature is offered by another program, I am now free to try other programs than Norton Int. Security. I have always felt it slowed my system down way too much and have wanted to try something else. Now I am free to do so since Symantec did not listen to how good the add blocker was and what it actually did (they got too focused on pop up blocking and couldn't see what else it was doing).

Kaspersky was rated number one this past year so that is where I am headed when my NIS subscription runs out. I guess I ought to thank Symantec for not listening to it's users because it forced me to find Quero to do what NIS now refuses to do.

I appreciate your reply. Mark B.

Re: Add on pack for Norton Internet Security missing stuff

We are not talking pop up blocker. We are talking ad blocker. Web browsers have pop up blocking, NOT ad blocking. They are not the same.

Web page ads are the major transporter of Viruses, Trojans, and etc. (I got a Trojan infection the first day I used 2008 - no ad blocker. NIS was useless in preventing this infection and tech support was clueless in helping me remove it.) Blocking the loading of ads is protecting us from infections. But I guess you all no longer care that NIS product is now an inferior product.

"Take the money and run"

Thank for letting me know about Quero, Preserved The 2nd. I too am not renewing my subscription. I am in 22 online groups and 8 online forums. I've been spreading the word about not using NIS.

Re: Add on pack for Norton Internet Security missing stuff

Firefox with Ad-Block Plus will block ads, i never see any ads unless i allow, you should also use Noscript with Firefox as well.

As for IE i do not know of any free ad blockers, AdMuncher seems to be highly regarded.
