viruses in exe and rar files

i downloaded a rar file that contains W32.HLLW.Gaobot.gen which Norton could not remove, fxgaobot, f-bot and kaspersky could not detect

inside the rar file is a exe that contains the virus, and being the novice that i am, i extracted the exe file from the rar file, does that mean that the virus has been activated?
if not, how can i delete the files?
what should i do?

Re: viruses in exe and rar files

Extracting the exe from the rar shouldn't activate the virus. The exe usually needs to be run.
