Which internet security do you recommend?

Hi ya'll, I just got rid of Norton internet security 07( too much of a system hog) what is a good internet security program that doesn't take so much memory and cpu usage. I'm looking for complete security i.e. av, firewall, spyware/adware protection, etc... I need one licensed for three computers. What do you recommend? thank you.( windows xp).

Re: Which internet security do you recommend?

i don't think you can go wrong with any of these.

kaspersky
bitdefender
nod32

make sure that you "trial" them before you make a commitment.

Re: Which internet security do you recommend?

Hi ndbender!!

I would recommend to you to install McAfee, NOD32 or BitDefender if you are concern about your computer security. It is worth to install this security programs, although the McAfee and BitDefender would consume some of your system resource. NOD32 maybe is one of the best security applications around

Ops, make sure you only install one antivirus. You may want to install anti-spyware or anti-adware applications as an addition. Just make sure you didn't install more than one same application such as two antivirus, two anti-spyware This would mess up your computer

But, as Glaswegian says, you might want to check this forum first:

That's not strictly true. You should only have one software firewall and one antivirus, but any number of antispyware apps.

Re: Which internet security do you recommend?

Had the same problem with Norton -- so got rid of it and installed AGV free version which works well. I then paid for it and it works even better -- I use the AGV firewall as well as Windows Defender, SpywareBlaster and SpyBOt S&R -- and apart from one irritating problem that has nothing to do with the above they work well. The AGV automatically updates and scans every day ... so my PC is relatively clean at the moment.

Ops...my fault! Didn't realize when write it... yup, actually you must don't want to install more than 1 antivirus, eventhough you may install more than 1 antispyware. but, as precautions, just limit the number of antispyware to maximum number of 3, because if you install more than that, it may affect your system perfomance. is that right koala?

Re: Which internet security do you recommend?

Yep

Some antispyware apps have options (like SpyBot's TeaTimer) to protect in realtime as well as user-controlled scans. Too many realtime processes running at the same time can slow down your system and possibly cause problems.

Re: Which internet security do you recommend?

i don't think you want more than one antispyware running in real-time. i have several that i scan with on-demand in safe mode. as long as they're not on the startup list and none of the processes in task manager, there should be no conflict. also, the programme itself may have an option to decline real-time protection.

It is better to have a antispyware with an real-time running options, such as Spybot TeaTimer. This is because when you have this kind of protection, you will be notified at any times, whenever there is some changes to the critical system files, such as an application addition to the startup list, changes in registry string, which you might not be able to detect using the manual scanning antispyware.

Re: Which internet security do you recommend?

agreed. spybot tea timer is a great programme.
i just wanted to clarify that running two real-time antispyware programmes is not recommended.
sometimes AV's and AS's can conflict. i had spy sweeper and kaspersky and there were always annoyances and slowdowns. i later learned that the conflict could have caused worse problems than i was experiencing.
