Question Can't find Parental Controls in NIS 2008.

I hope this is the right forum to place this inquiry;

I'm a pretty experienced Computer Consultant, and I have a client whom I recently installed Norton Internet Security 2008 for on the computer I recently rebuilt for him. The PC is a Dell Dimension 8400 desktop tower, with a P4-3.01GHz and about 1GB RAM, and a 160GB hard drive running Dell WindowsXP SP2. Let me preface this by telling you that I have been using NIS (Norton Internet Security) as my primary security suite software for most of my clients for several years. At least 2002. My client recently decided to upgrade to the newest version, 2008, and it all installed pretty nicely (Norton does a pretty good job given how complex the installation process can be) and it all works both locally + Internet/Email are ok.

Except that I (we) can't find what Symantec did with the PARENTAL CONTROLS section that was in previous versions 2007 and before. I've Emailed Symantec Tech. Support and have an incident call open, but they've never Emailed me back. I've also tried calling them, and sat on hold for over an hour with no one ever answering. AND I've tried doing the Online Chat which usually works when all else fails; and I sat in the queue with 72 other people ahead of me, and had to leave after about 90 min. of waiting. So I never got to connect with a Tech.

I downloaded a document from the Symantec website that discusses something called an "Add-on Pack" which is available which adds the Parental Control functionality to the NIS 2008 product. But, the document doesn't tell you how to get the Add-on Pack or if it costs additional, or if it's free and included on the install CD that came with the retail box or not.

I'm still trying to help this customer, and don't want to uninstall the NIS 2008 as it's a big job to do and replace with another product, but I will if I have to. My client has 2 young sons and is very concerned with making sure he can adjust the Parental Controls to the appropriate age level for each of his boys. I told him the General settings installed by NIS 2008 are probably protecting them for really bad places, but he's not convinced; especially since he doesn't have the familiar configure button he's used to having in the earlier NIS product versions which allows the user to set age-appropriate preset settings (i.e.: Supervisor, Adult, Teenager, Pre-Teenager, Child).

If anyone has any suggestions on how to get this Add-On Pack or if Symantec has REMOVED the Parental Control from the NIS 2008 product and I need to purchase the new Norton 360 product or something like that, I'd really appreciate some help, especially from someone who is currently running the NIS 2008 product or who has installed it recently on a computer.

Thanks for this great forum! I've used these for many years and always got good results. I look forward to any/all replies, and also look forward to helping to answer any Technical questions I can for other forum users.

Does this help?

Looks like it's free, and only available as an addon.

Thumbs Up Re: Can't find Parental Controls in NIS 2008.

Hi Tetonbob:

This looks like the same information I finally received via Email from Symantec Tech. Support, approximately 3 weeks after I first sent my request to them. I greatly appreciate your prompt and accurate response! I got busy with the Holidays and everything, but wanted you to know along with anyone else this looks like the right stuff to answer my question. My Client, however, won't let me get onto his computer until after the New Year (today) to download the Add-On pack and try it out.

I intend to post a message to this thrread once I can confirm it works the way Symantec says it should or not to let everyone else know who might encounter this same situation--I'm guessing I'm not going to be the only one.

Happy New Year to you and everyone of the Tech Support Forum! Keep up the Excellent work.
