Spybot Search & Destroy problem
I have some problems with 'Spybot Search & Destroy'...
Every time I run a scan it only finds one thing something called 'AdRevolver' which is found every time I run a scan. And I cannot see anything in the settings that should cause this. So what do I do? Is there another program against spyware that I can use? |

Re: Spybot Search & Destroy problem
AdRevolver should just be a tracking cookie. Regardless, verify that it is by clicking the little + sign once it pops up in the list when using Spybot. It is not really a danger as it is merely a banner manager on people's sites that creates cookies and stores them in your system when you click a link. I usually pick up one or two of these AdRevolver cookies every few days. Don't be concerned here. Just clear your browser cookies or use Spybot to get rid of them.
As far as other programs go, there are tons out there. Make sure #1 that you have a constant antivirus program running on your system at ALL times (Norton, McAffee, AVG, etc.) and #2 have a backup on idle standby as they all have relatively different virus definition files. Therefore, they pick up different stuff, but usually the main, most common nuisances are covered by most of them. #3 get Hijack This to scan your registry to see if there is any bad keys in there that it recognizes. I highly advise, however, creating a backup of your registry with this tool before removing any suspicious keys. Hope that helps! |

Re: Spybot Search & Destroy problem
Yeah but the weird thing is that it does not find any real spyware. Before it usually found other things than just this AdRevolver.
So is that not suspicious? |

Re: Spybot Search & Destroy problem
Not really, it's probably a cookie being dropped by a site you visit frequently. If all Spybot is finding is cookies....then really, it's not that unusual, unless you have some sort of cookie filtering/blocking going on.
Cookies are nothing to be worried about. They get installed on your computer everytime you visit any webpage. Now some of those are good cookies that get installed for ease of use for next time you visit the same page, but some cookies are spyware used for tracking users surfing habits. Most of those cookies are third party cookies that can be blocked: In Firefox go to Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies Click Exceptions, identify the site you want to block, and click on Block. In IE go to Tools > Internet Options > Privacy and click on Advanced in the Privacy tab Now put a check next to "Override automatic cookie handling" Set first party cookies to Accept and third party cookies to Block Also put a check to "Always allow session cookies" OK your way out. This won't prevent all bad cookies from being installed, but will reduce the amount. Also there is another program you can use. Spywareblaster Prevents the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software. Blocks spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox. Restricts the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer. You can read more about cookies at the Cookie Concept You can tidy up with this tool: Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
