getting rid of a virus

I opened an email from someone I knew, but it was a virus. It seemed like I was not able to open it, but then other people I know received emails from me, or people in my address book (and people not in my address book whom I have received emails from.) Each person has a different subject, but everyone (including me) who sends out a message has the words "Troy Ball" in the body of the text.
Any help is much appreciated. I know nothing about viruses, and I am also interested in finding out how to scan my computer.
Thank you!

Re: getting rid of a virus

Hi and welcome to TSF.

Please start here and follow the instructions.

http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...sting-log.html

If you cannot complete any of the Steps, simply move on to the next one - remember to let the Analyst know about this when you post your logs.

Please note that the Security Forum is always busy, so I would ask for your patience while waiting for a reply.

Re: getting rid of a virus

Hopefully this has not infected your pc. Are you using Outlook or Outlook Express? If so, Run an Ad-aware or Spybot-Search and Destroy.

These guys will clear your system.

IF your concerned in the future, email monitoring maybe a solution for you. Try Symantec, they have email monitoring as it comes into your Outlook Inbox.

Good luck!

@mannomeister - please follow the link I gave you and post the logs in the HJT forum. We can then review your system and get you properly clean.

The same thing happened to me. To get rid of the Troy Ball, I went into preferences in my e-mail and there is a signature box that you can unclick and then delete the words Troy Ball. Very annoying!
