AOLdial.exe

Recently I've noticed this file name appearing when I have to shut my computer down (AVG Virus checker has a habit of hanging) and it comes up in a message when the computer is shutting down: AOLDialler.exe end program (something like that)

Why would I need AOLdialler. I don't use not ever have used AOL and I have broadband so I don't need any diallers?

I went into to windows and its located in the system32 folder, tried to delete it but it says: Cannot delete: Access denied.

Any ideas if it's something suspect?

Thanks

Re: AOLdial.exe

Hello fionamaye,

By your description, it is more than likely that you have a malware infection on your computer.

That said, I recommend that you read this article, "Having problems with spyware and pop-ups? - First Steps"; follow the instructions very carefully; then, post all the requested logs and information; as instructed, in the HiJackThis Log Help Forum.
(Simply, click on the coloured links to be re-directed.)

Please ensure that you create a new thread in the HiJackThis Log Help Forum; not back here in this one.

When carrying out The 5 Steps, if you cannot complete any of them for whatever reason, just continue on with the next one until they are all completed.
However,it is extremely important to make mention of the fact that you could not complete any of the steps in your post to The HJT Help Forum; where an Analyst will assist you with other workarounds.

Once done, please be patient, as the Security Team Analysts are usually very busy; one of them will answer your request as soon as they can.

Good Luck with it.

Kind Regards,

Re: AOLdial.exe

Thanks Chaffeur2, but I can't download the Panda ActiveScan as I don't have IE 5.0 or later. I don't use IE as a search engine, do I really have to download a newer version?

Re: AOLdial.exe

You can skip that part for now. The analyst helping you will offer alternative scanners for you to use. Remember to include the fact that you couldn't run Panda when you post your logs.
