XP skips PW check on BOOT
ok first not to throw weight around but ive been servicing comps for 6 years so please spare the BS and tip toeing i can handle complex tasks.
second heres the problem when my comp BOOTS (not unhibernates) it skips the PW check. if i hibernate and when i return from hibernate it asks for the PW but when i restart the comp it skips it. i have tried creating another user, no affect(pointless but tried no the less) checked msconfig/services no user type services are stoped or on manual checked regedit/HKLM and HKCU software/microsoft/windows/current version/run and run once and run once ex guess what nothing in there that shouldnt be (just nvida and audio stuff) checked that the user had a PW (some brat wouldnt leave me alone till i checked and changed the PW so it was done) changed between fast user switching/welcome screen and the standard SN/PW screen and still skips on boot if i log out i get a PW request/check to log back in but when i restart (ie. BOOT) it keeps skiping the PW check. ive been working on comps for a while as have the other partners that i work with and none of us know whats going on. P.S. yes i know reinstalling xp (reparing the install) would work but i want to figure out the cause of this not just glaze it over and cheat. |

Re: XP skips PW check on BOOT
Hi and welcome to TSF
![]() I really can not help with this because I am not a security analyst, but the Trillian Messenger has come up as a lot of security issues. It can be used as a hacking portal for hackers as it has many security flaws. I had a case that had a Trillian hack and they are still trying to find that person. You should wait until a security analyst comes to look over this.

Re: XP skips PW check on BOOT
I would try this as well. Go to start -> run and type in 'control userpasswords2' without the quotes and click on OK. In the window that pops up, make sure the checkbox for "Users must enter a username and password to use this computer." is checked. If it wasn't checked, try restarting and see if that fixes it.

Re: XP skips PW check on BOOT
thank you very much. one thing i love about computers is you learn something new every day... well that might just be windows, but thats beside the point. when i went into control userpasswords2 i found a user not found in control panel>>users called ASPNET it was deleted as well and the unchecked box was check. after a quick reboot guess what it asked for user and pw. thanks guys.
