EEK! Corrupt files

Hi, I hope this isn't a dumb question...my husband bought some kind of download document from Singapore, (which made my hair stand on end.) The person running the website sent the downloads to my husband's email box, in OutLook Express. I tried downloading them off the webserver's mail site, and as I was doing so, a box came up which said that the zip file was corrupt and it stopped the download. There was also an application he had to fill out, and when I went to download that, a kind of toolbar came up on my browser that said it was blocking the site. Then a security box came up and said something to the effect that this file was also corrupt, and it wasn't recommended that I download anything from this site. What is a corrupt file? What does this mean? My husband wants to contact this person again and have him send him the download again, but I am worried about trying to download anything from this site now. Are my fears justified? (My son used to do all this for me but he moved, and said I have to learn this security stuff on my own, since I am the Administrator on the computer.)

Re: Corrupt files

A corrupt file means it's not complete or something, and it can't be opened.
That's all I know.

Re: Corrupt files

Hi, Lisa!

I think yr hair has V good instincts!

I would recommend, if U don't already, U get good free anti virus, i.e. AVG free, and good antispy utilities. These will appear on yr right click menus when U mouse on and right click on a file---before opening it--- and U will then have the option to scan that file for insects. Sounds as if U already have good protection, given the warnings U got.

If you don't already, [u] also need a good free firewall like Comodo or Zone Alarm.

But having & employing the options in the above would also give U more specific data.

It's a dangerous cyberworld, boy....

I agree, I would use Comodo firewall pro(it's free, no kidding and it is crazy-awesome!) and, for the safety of others, AVG Free Anti-virus. BTW a corrupt file usually is a file with parts missing, so to speak. It can be by downloading or transferring and something in Windows interrupts it.This is very common with dial-up(at least with me).
