[SOLVED] Adaware 2007 [moved from HJT forum]

Hey all, I have an emachine that was picked up at yard sale for parts. Was told by seller it had been checked and was not worth fixing. Installed a new power supply and works like a dream. Downloaded and ran all programs I usually run and Adaware SE v1.06 found "sahagent" in 2 registry keys and could not fix. Ran AVG, Symentec free online scanner, Computer Associate free online scanner and all found nothing. Spybot 1.4 found a couple but not "sahagent" upgraded to Adaware 2007 for XP. It also found the same 2 in registry keys but could not repair. Downloaded free trial programs "webroot" "Computer Associate's Security Center" and Ashampoo's Spyware program" All found a couple but not "sahagent".
Google for removing sahagent and none of the procedures recommended had any entries where they said they would be. The keys Adaware found are 1 in clsid and 1 in typelib. Do you think it is safe to mark these files ignore in Adaware. I know this is a hijack forum but I have never used that program.

Re: Adaware 2007 [moved from HJT forum]

I'd be interested in knowing the exact locations of the finds by Ad-Aware 2007..in other words can you copy the report here?

You may want to ask in their very own support forum as well.

Re: Adaware 2007 [moved from HJT forum]

I'll be working on it in about an hour and a half from now. I will try to copy exact location and paste. If I can't I'll write it out as I have written the location down as to try to manually remove it from the registry.

Re: Adaware 2007 [moved from HJT forum]

Be sure to back up the registry before making any manual forays into it.

Re: Adaware 2007 [moved from HJT forum]

Here we go, I can't copy and paste but I'll type it in. The first is under - HKCR - I assume it HKEY classes Root clsid\coef89ee-eec7-4535-ao41-f1ebf79560af. Expanded it shows5 folders named - implemented categories - no value set progid - no value set programmable - no value set typelib -no value set and versionindependentprogid - no value set......

The second entry is HKCR typelib\52cacfdf-9170-46a9-ae2e-e594d324c72a. expanded wit 1 folder named 1.1 - no value set......
I have both of these screenshots saved as jpegs if any one wants to to email them let me know.

As for making any registry changes I wasn't unless files named after the SAHAGENT showed up and net instructions on how to remove.
Thanks for the help
Dan

Re: Adaware 2007 [moved from HJT forum]

Seems like Lavasoft would want to know that Ad-Aware 2007 is not removing those when you ask it to fix them.

They're pretty good about responding.

Really, you should consider posting on their support forum so they can check it out, and make any corrections if their database needs it.

This will help you and others in the future.

They may want more in-depth information...towards that end, you can do this first:

Download & extract this file to it's own folder - Registry Search

Launch Registry Search
In the search box, enter

coef89ee-eec7-4535-ao41-f1ebf79560af

& click "Ok".
Notepad will open with some text in it (the file will also be saved in the program's folder as well).
Post this text in your reply

Repeat for this CLSID:

52cacfdf-9170-46a9-ae2e-e594d324c72a

Re: Adaware 2007 [moved from HJT forum]

I ran registry search and it didn't find the string. It seems to search machine and users and these are located in classes root. I posted over at lavasoft after you first suggestion, sorry I didn't mention that. As of now I still have no response there.

Re: Adaware 2007 [moved from HJT forum]

You might try loging in using safe mode and running adaware from there. Sometimes what doesn't work in regular mode will in safe mode.

Re: Adaware 2007 [moved from HJT forum]

I will try to post screen shots Wed afternoon. I am no longer at familys house where computer is. They are jpegs, do I just copy then try to paste in window. I tried to run adaware in safe mode but kept getting an error. I guess adaware 2007 isn't set up to run in safe mode. Still no response from the lavasoft forum site. Any more ideas amI will try all when I get their tomorrow.
Dan

I went to jpegs I have on my system and click copy when I click here paste is not an option.

Re: Adaware 2007 [moved from HJT forum]

Hi Dan -

Ad-Aware 2007 runs a service, which probably doesn't load in safe mode. I haven't tried using it in safe mode yet.

I think you may have posted your thread in a wrong area of the Lavasoft forum. I've asked a mod I know there to move it if that's the case.

You'll need to attach a jpeg to a post here, or upload it to a site such as photobucket and then post a link to the uploaded image.

Use the Manage Attachments button in the reply window.

Size matters, though, if it's more than 1.96MB it won't attach.

Re: Adaware 2007 [moved from HJT forum]

tetonbob, calamity jane wanted me to post the last log file at lavasoft, I log back in but get this error - Sorry, you do not have permission to start a topic in this forum - no matter if I try to reply to my post or start a new topic. I emailed them this morning about it but still haven't received a response. Here are the screen shots from the registry location.

Re: Adaware 2007 [moved from HJT forum]

Hi Dan -

Since you're in regedit, you should be able to just right click and delete those keys.

Always back up the registry before performing work there.

Or, you can create a regfile for it

Copy and paste the following into Notepad (don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4):

Quote:
REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\clsid\{C0EF89EE-EEC7-4535-A041-F1EBF79560A7}]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\typelib\{52cacfdf-9170-46a9-ae2e-e594d324c72a}]

Save the file as "delete.reg". Make sure to save it with the quotes. It should look like this:

Close Notepad.

Double click on the delete.reg file and choose Yes to merge/add it to the registry. You may delete the file afterwards.

Re: Adaware 2007 [moved from HJT forum]

Tried manual deleting, I get error - cannot delete error while deleting key - Tried the REGEDIT4, everything seemed to complete ok. Ran adaware after restart and it still found same virus in the same keys.

Re: Adaware 2007 [moved from HJT forum]

I used a registry cleaner that have been using for a while and was able to locate and remove both keys. I deleted the backups the cleaner program made, just to make sure they were not reinstalled. Ran adaware and it found nothing. Rebooted computer ran adaware again nothing. I think we can consider this project solved.
I would like to take a minute and thank every one who offered suggestions to help. I know that peoples time is valuable and I appreciate all who take the time to help others who don't have the funds to run to the local repair shop every time their computer acts up. This was only a $15.00 purchase at a yard sale for parts, that is now a complete functioning computer. My neices wont have to fight over using the computer now. we thank you all.
Dan

Re: Adaware 2007 [moved from HJT forum]

Thanks for the feedback, Dan.

It was probably a permissions issue, which your regcleaner was able to solve.

Just to be clear, those were adware registry items, not a virus.

At any rate, I'm glad you were able to get your issue resolved.

For others reading this thread:

Ad-Aware 2007 does run in Safe Mode. Thanks, CJ! And I've just tested it.

Not sure what Dan's error was, or why Ad-Aware 2007 did not run in Safe Mode for him, but it is designed to do so.

Note:

On some older machines, like the one I just tested it on, there will be a screen resolution issue in safe mode.

Ad-Aware 2007 likes to run at 1024 x 768

If an older machine cannot push that resolution in safe mode, the Ad-Aware GUI will be huge, and not all the buttons will be readily accessible. If you know where they are from running it in normal mode, you can just make out where the buttons are to run the scan.

This should affect very few machines....and Safe Mode is not always needed for the tool to run effectively.
