AVG Problems

Hello all, I've just come home to see my AVG tray icon is grey so I opened AVG and it's telling me my internal virus database is out of date but it won't let me get todays update. Also, I left it scanning this morning so I thought I'd look at the results but it's saying there are no results to show, that's none at all. My windows defender icon has also decided to put in a show, something it never does and it wants to update so i've gone along with that but I'm a bit concerned that two security programs are acting unusually. Can anyone shed any light please.
PS I'm scanning now to see what happens to the results.

Re: AVG Problems

I had Windows Defender and the icon would go away even though I set it to always stay. Also it's Real-time protection would always shut itself down and I would contantly get a message from WD saying it's real-time protection was off. Then I would have it turn it back on only to find it turn itself off again. I have since then ditched WD.

Re: AVG Problems

Hi

I noticed on the AVG site that there is a program update to version 7.5.476. I don't know if that's anything to do with it but you can update manually here

Re: AVG Problems

I'm not over impressed with WD but I keep it for the real-time protection although in the year and a bit I've had it it's found one thing!
As for the AVG it's just got a priority update but the icon is still greyed out. I think that link is what I just got thanks. It does seem to be working ok in spite of itself.

still with the avg

My AVG is acting strangely, the icon is greyed out and although it seems to be working ok its obvious that something's up. I'm getting updates daily and all the components in 'control centre' are reported as working except the 'database' which is reported as out of date. I've been to AVG's forum but i can't find where to join/register. If I can't fix this i'm going to have to reinstall or change.
Is anyone else with AVG getting this problem. I posted on this subject yesterday but i am concerned

Re: AVG Problems

Hello kaloochi,

I am a Beta Tester for Grisoft®, and heartily agree with the information that Glaswegian gave you with the link to Grisoft®, the makers of AVG™....go there and download the setup file again.

In case you missed it, here is the link again. (Just click on the coloured link)

Please use the Direct Link from the Grisoft (AVG) Server, not the one from download. com.
( It is shown as the Windows Alternative Download).

This time, 'save' the .exe file to your desktop, and when the download is complete, double click on it and install it as if it is the first time that you have done it.

DO NOT uninstall the current AVG™ that you already have, as the installation will detect that its there and then give you the option to 'repair' the current installation...Do this.

Once you have 'repaired' the installation, you will need to check for updates and download them too.

Give this a try and report back with the results.

Kind Regards,

Re: AVG Problems

Hi,

Right click on the Tray Icon > Check for Updates...and see if it will retrieve another update that it has not before.

Post back with what happens.

Re: AVG Problems

Hello Dave, yes I've been doing that and it gets the updates as they become available but the icon stays grey. Maybe a complete reinstallation would do the trick, what do you think

Re: AVG Problems

Hi kal,

It seems to me that one of the database upate .dll files is corrupted for some reason or another, which I'm afraid I don't know why.

So uninstall your current AVG and reinstall it with the one that you have on your desktop still (hopefully)...if not follow the instructions in my previous post to get it from the AVG Server no where else.

Let me know what happens.

Regards,

Dave T.

Re: AVG Problems

Have you completely retrieved all updates?...sometimes this can take two or three shots at the Check for updates from the tray icon.

Re: AVG Problems

Hi Kaloochi,

I have received the following email from Grisoft®...
Quote:
Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you for your email.

Please open the AVG Control center program by doubleclick on the gray AVG icon in systray. What component is in red status? Select the component by one left click. What exact error message is displayed on the bottom of the AVG Control Center program? We need configuration files of AVG. There is a CfgDiag utility attached to this message. The attachment is an archive that can be extracted using WinZip or WinRAR programs. After extracting it run CfgDiag_en.exe (by double-click). This program generates few files, containing system information of your PC and AVG configuration files, too. Please use the Send eMail button to create a new message in your default e-mail client. Please describe the problem in the body of this message.

Best regards,

Mirek Makovec
AVG Technical Support
You will need to quote this case Number Re: G#0702072728 - AVG™ Free Home Edition 7.5.476

(The attachment referred to in the email is below - Right Click it and 'save' it to your machine.)

Good Luck with it, and please post back with the results.

Kind Regards,
