Running 2 anti virus ... or not
This could belong in several forums I think so hope its OK here since you're all multi-talented.
I read Glaswegian's thread on YouTube too late! This isn't my pc but I sent the links to some videos. I wont regret the old Ali G interview with the Beckhams for Comic Relief though. Anyway, having read the thread and the fact this pc doesn't get much maintenance, although it had no noticeable problems, I followed the 5 steps before you post. So, 3 online scans, downloaded Ad-aware 2007 which worked fine except I couldn't find how to add the VX2 cleaner, new copies of everything and all run a couple of times later, doing their own thing as we go etc, I find that AntiVir is damaged/corrupt or something. Its incomplete with bits missing it seems. So I uninstall it and download a new copy. Which when I go to install says there's another version which I must uninstall first. Several hours later I am still unable to install. Now, in HJT I have this line O23 - Service: AntiVir Update (AVWUpSrv) - Unknown owner - (no file). So I figure getting rid of that will help resolve. But I can't. I have tried stopping the service through HJT, services.msc, command sc, safe mode, regedit. I have been here and to dozens of sites suggesting ways and tried the AntiVir removal tool which doesn't. I spent all day yesterday doing this. So my thoughts were ..... I think I'll just download AVG. Now what I'd like to know is, although AntiVir thinks there's an antivirus running, will my pc, because I do remember about having 2 antivirus running at the same time and conflicts etc. Alternatively, you might have a foolproof method of getting rid of the AntiVir traces, I have tried a few. I'm going away for a few days later today so I won't be able to respond - I'm not being rude!! |

Re: Running 2 anti virus ... or not
Being a beta Tester for Lavasoft's Ad-Aware 2007, you do not need to install the VX2 cleaner as an add on any more for Ad-Aware 2007 because it is built in.

Nicki!!!!!!!!!
Nice to see you back! Looks like AntiVir is a bit of a nuisance to remove, but seems to be some success recorded here http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=134193 Don't know if you tried any of these options but you can let me know how it goes.

Re: Running 2 anti virus ... or not
Dearest Glaswegian, what a comfort you are to a tired old bat. I don't know yet whether I'm back or just pretending but hey, I've defeated the rats!!!! My departure has been delayed by flooding, I sat in the traffic queue going nowhere for 50 minutes before conveniently abandoning the car near my local - I've been mopping up all day but it meant I could read this.
Wilders was one of the few sites I didn't visit. I've tried everything suggested there except for one tool mentioned in post 10 which I can't access at the moment because de dah de dah, so I'll have to find the site and register I expect before I can use the tool. I admit to being seriously frustrated here, but what do you reckon about the pc thinking I'm running 2 antivirus at once. Hey - just seen Sheffield flooding No 1 in the BBC news. Wish I was back in sunny Devon. Will try to get to that tool site in the morning but also hopefully will be able to leave for this job I'm supposed to be doing so it may be a while before I can continue trying to sort this out. But thank you for that link- I will report back. And to SpySentinel - thank you for that info. I was interested in this new version. It seems by the time taken now in comparison to the older version which is on my pc, to take 100% longer to go through so expect that reflects the depth of analysis. As I said, I had no problems running it and it found some stuff, not serious. So, on with the fight tomorrow, possibly, otherwise in a few days time. Thanks guys for this. Re: Running 2 anti virus ... or not
I don't know what order I did everything on Sunday, including RegSeeker, but when I tried the CCleaner suggestion again this morning it found an old Start Menu Key and that has sorted the problem and the 023 entry has gone. Actually I hadn't realised its best to run the scan several times. I installed Antivir but found it horrible and promptly uninstalled it with no trouble, so back to good old AVG for me. Thank you Glaswegian for your help, hope to 'see' you again soon.
