windows xp registry error messages

I had a lot of problems with my computer reading some cds or movies and audio was either not there or sounded like chipmunks. I got frustrated and reinstalled windows xp and now registry errors keep popping up. it even crshes some of my programs, I have several registry cleaners installed but these errors still prevail. any ideas.

howdy dmorr,

What do the errors say exactly?

As for registry cleaners, they are no good unless you had some spyware on your machine..As you can see they tend to do more bad than good.

Dmorr,

I would read the folling link, and post a Hijack this log in the Hijack this forum..

If that error is coming up that is not a " real" error.

Re: windows xp registry error messages

I deleted all the registry cleaners i had installed, I did not see them on the list but I did not want to take anymore chances. I checked for rogue and suspect spyware. added 2 scanners and mcafee antivirus. The link says go to step 2 I guess it is spyware/adware removal tools. should I be installing one of those. I have not had any error messages lately, I also locked down internet explorer.

Re: windows xp registry error messages

I don't have anything against you.... And I know you have a very good security team, no one was responding to this person, except for geek73 and they had not gotten back to dmorr in a while, plus I don't think that I have all of the capabilities to help dmorr to the fullest extent! nothing against any of you, just trying to help someone, as quickly as possible!

Re: windows xp registry error messages

hello team,

I am not good a following directions some time. I printed out the 5 step process. In step one I uninstalled all what I think was spyware. The only thing I did uninstall was microsoft free registry 1.1 and pc bugdoctor 1.0.0.4
I was not sure about them. I installed snoopfree, spyware blaster, spyware guard and mcafee as my virus protection. I did go into internet explorer and block alot of things. So far no more pop ups. I have scanned and no virus has been found, then the link says go to step 2. What I want to know is do I need to install a spware/adware removal tool and were is step 3-5. What is hijacking a log anyway.

Re: windows xp registry error messages

Hi dmorr -

<edit> To answer question....HijackThis is a registry tool analysts use to help determine if there is malware (infections) present on your system. DO NOT attempt to use it to fix anything yourself, as fixing the wrong thing might render your system inoperable.</edit>

At the bottom of each page in the 5 steps is a clickable link which takes you to the next step.

The most important one for you to perform at this point is this:

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt in your thread in the HijackThis Log Help Forum.
  5. Please attach extra.txt to your post.
To attach a file to a new post, simply
  1. Click the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
  2. copy and paste the following into the "Upload File from your Computer" box:
    C:\Deckard\System Scanner\extra.txt
  3. Click Upload.

What DSS will do:
  • create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
  • clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
  • check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review. DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

Hi

I've moved the log you posted to the HJT forum - if you've started another thread there, I'll combine them - best to keep everything in one place.
