Cannot completely switch off AVG resident scanner (excel slow to open)

Hello
Having recently installed AVG 7.5.446 on XP Pro SP2 I was very happy - thanks to AVG. However I've noticed that now excel docs are slow to open, with a message in the excel status bar "Running virus scan".

I deactivated Resident Scanner, no change.
I uninstalled AVG completely and excel was back to normal.
I've now re-installed AVG ( and switched of resident scanner) and the problem is back.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions for alternative free virus scanners (I don't resident protection)
Thanks in advance!

Hi,

Adding to what Glaswegian has said, AVG released a rather large update on 18 April with 'fixes' for type of problem.
The actual program now is AVG 7.5.464 with a virus data base of 269.5.2/766.
Follow Iain's advice and also ensure that you have the latest updates from AVG.

Kind Regards,

Re: Cannot completely switch off AVG resident scanner (excel slow to open)

Thanks DaveT,

Just checked the AVG website ( http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1 ) and the latest version is only 7.5.446 which is what I'm running.

Where did you get a later version than that from please?
Thanks,
Ian

Hi Ian,

By the look of it AVG have 2 different versions, one for the "Free" version, and another for the "Professional" (Paid) version.
(The figures of 7.5.465 is for the Professional version.)
Having said that I suggest that you contact Grisoft direct and see if they can shed any light on your issue.

Kind Regards,

Thanks for looking into that for me DaveT. I have contacted Grisoft and will post the resolution here when/if it becomes available.

Re: Cannot completely switch off AVG resident scanner (excel slow to open)

The free grisoft AVG support forum was helpful, and the answer below has resolved the issue -

"Moved to a more appropriate forum area. The question has nothing to do with an installation issue but a configuration one.

Re-run the latest AVG install file... select Add/Remove components and unselect MS Office integration. If you don't use the very latest AVG install file you will likely corrupt installation.

Please note, that many macro based malwares can't be detected with just normal file scans and this will open up a potential security hole since the macro's based malwares will not always get detected in any other method used."

I followed the above steps and now excel opens as usual. I appreciate the remarks about the macro based malware risk, but am happy to take that risk as I don't open excel files from strangers.
