If one backs-up with Veritas "entire system restore" and formats the hard drive, will anything be lost? If so, what?

If you just back up your files and documents, You will loose all your installed programs, computer settings, Network settings, Web browser settings and changes.

I would test this method first.

Have you thought about using a cloning software such as Ghost?

System Restore only backup will remove most information.

Why do you need to reformat?

The answer to your question depends on the answer to mine.
