Rootkit Freeware??

Hi,
My free trial of Blacklite has expired. I just got something called "Icesword" from MajorGeeks.....rated impressively, but have not learned it or tried it yet.

Does anyone know of a very good, free Rootkit utilty? Thanks,
Jill

Edit: Just tried to learn/run the Icesword....no help file appears and I do not understand this utility.....esp when running the SDDT part....yielding red entries which scare me.....is this like STDs?

OK my usual humor.....but can anyone explain the attached, please? Do I need to get rid of the red thingies?
Wut R the red thingies??

Maybe this software is not for me.....
J.
Second edit: Just found and got....had 2 fill out things, all legit. Can't post direct link---ther page said not to, so posting the URL of where I found it:
http://www.computerworld.com/action/...rce=rss_news50

Maybe this one is good.

Finale, Maybe

OK, maybe this thread is already resolved?!

I like the Sopho free utility intensely: each part clear as crystal, beautifully written and huge PDF help file.

I ran it....it found 8 hidden thinges.....but it did not check any, and all R not removable; U can find out abotu each as you click on it. It appears I have hidden Netscape junk. Thought I had gotten rid of that....also thought Gates had way back Not really funny, that.

But my take is none of the 8 are threats.

Anyone smart having more info....I will be most grateful. I am attaching shots.

I just luuuuuv Windows.....infinite, ongoing need for anti utilities! That time is money will nevah matter to MS. Cause, C.....it ain't THEIR money; it is OUR money.

Hi, ejames,

Ok....that is probably good idea. But it appears Sapho checks the boxes of dangerous thingies.....though did not like that however unchecked.....those above were "not removable."

Let me go do this.

Thanks!

jill,
sophos is a reputable company. there are many of others at www.virus.gr that you may consider trying out. you probably already know this, but if you scan with another programme, you need to pause protection with your current real-time residential av. i scan with about 20 programmes. many av scans also detect rootkits, and a rootkit can be devastating. you have good cause to worry.

OMG, really???? Nowww, instead of sleeping 4 hours, I will sleep 2.Thanks again, I was worried but don't like 2 bother the HJT team.....I know they R swamped; I will be patient until it is examoned.

But before my free trial of Blacklite ran out.....it picked up nothing when I ran it....though I didn't know 2 disable AVG.

C this? And I get shot down in offline post for raising issues in detail of Windows versus mac technology!

And e.....I am SO CAREFUL!

A lot of rootkit programs are already virtually redundant, as malware programmers have already found ways of hiding their rootkits even from these programs which are specifically designed to detect them?!

Search google for the "gromozon rootkit" for some interesting reading ;)

cricket,
rootkits can be elusive. remember, symantec is able to remove the rootkit that sony had on their copyrighted DVDs. it's true that that rootkit was not developed to do harm to people.

jill,
what's done is done. just remember to pause protection before you scan, and after you're done with the scan, re-enable protection. it can't hurt to scan with different scanners. an excellent one, because it removes alot of what it finds, is trendmicro, but detecting the malware is beneficial, even if you can't remove it. as long as you know the specific name of the malware. there are new removal programmes being developed all the time, and the well known ones constantly develop new capabilities. i would scan with those programmes. are there problems with your system, if so what?
don't be shy. get your hijackthis posted. you're why they're there. they will gladly fix you up. take advantage of all these things. you might luck out and have no malware at all.

O, lovely!!! Thse people should get lives, OK?.....and, if hooked up with businesses, learn to build those Real Deal.

e:
U R very kind, I cherish kind; dearth of that in the world these days. Yes, the second I saw your suggestion, I followed up, posted both a link 2 this thread with its visuals, and current log; waiting for diagnosis.

U will be happy to know that couple of months ago, I bought Trend Micro! I only buy software if I test it and find it atypically viable. (Also sometimes visit Trend for Housecall scan.) I have carefully, differentially, arrived at my protection utilities ovah time.....I will attach the right section of my desktop and U will C my current armanetarium.....that one is needed altogether....the ELCH! issue. With Windows.

I was tester on the excellent and warpspeed AWC from iobit in China (even freeware version is amaaaazing)...and over time, was able to delete both Spybot and Ad-Aware.....I tested, and my current amalgam picked everything up, and those two hapily, became not needed. Being able to lighten up in this way was major.

I am being optimistic, but also realized, given I have cloned, internal badckup HDD I update weekly via incremental update function in XXclon (which I also bought), if I have an ISSUE...it's on both drives. I like 2 B consisent, OK?

Of course, my lappy, used rarely.....isn't source of concern in this.

I will say this: only virus, in this case a trojan, I evah got, AVG caught immediately and I put it in the vault....still makes me sick.....was fairly recent. How did this happen? I was researching Thai & Chinese silk fabric, OK? How innocuous is that?? At one point, was told I needed Chinese language thingy to propery display page....I thought I hit no....but was in hurry, and must have hit "yes".
....and that was where the trojan was lurking! Just that it is there in the VAULT...makes me wince, OK?

Thanks again, guys; will report the minute the "lab report" is issued!

it doesn't surprise me that you got a trojan from an asian site. bad guys have even infected google and wikipedia. recently they infected the miami dolphins website. other sites that i won't visit are movie and weather sites. i was told unfavorable things about weather bug. once i visited a movie site, before i knew the shortcut (ctrl + w) to close, i couldn't get out of the site. pop-ups appeared quicker than i could hit the little red X.
i told my sister about trendmicro when she told me her av expired. she tried it because it was the best choice of the free avs. she actually paid for a license. i use kaspersky myself.
glad you posted your hijackthis. it won't be long before they examine it. if anything can fix you up, this will. i am rooting for you.

e:

OK was last sentence re "rooting"purposeful"/ironic???

Amazing re these data re Asian sites! Of course the NFL is already so infected with anabolic steroids.....wut harm could a few trojans do????

But jeeze....was just triyng to determine which kind of silk yardage to buy----very esoteric subject, silk fabric---to make silk duvet!

I will always choose AVG for my anti virus....could get MacVee for nothing via aOL.....would pay money to AVOID BOTH that & Norton.....but the Trend micro I bought is naturally only for malware.....but yes, it does pick up occasional insects my other utilities do not, which is why I bought it. Excellent advice for your sister!

I also luv that unlike Panda....which will scan for free online....the online Trend/Housecall scan.....also repairs!

Given your spelling, e, it appears U may B somewhere in the UK, yes?

Thanks again,
Jill

no, oswego new york. just off lake ontario.
i will never root for the rootkit. the aol active shield is actually kaspersky with a less attractive packaging, and no proactive defense features. it still has the awesome rate of detection that kaspersky is known for, and i believe that it also has real-time protection. there was actually speculation that there was some kind of trick possibly being played by aol, with the eula, that they had intent to sneak spyware onto users computers, but many respectable and knowledgeable people have confirmed that it's a legitimite programme, and they are not guilty of dirty tricks, at least with this particular programme. maybe aol is trying to use this programme as a form of damage control, considering the debacle of exposing more than 650,000 customers personal data. i have a feeling they may end up bankrupt, but before they do, they want to treat people to this kaspersky product for free.
i actually like mcafee myself also, i had it on my win98, but kaspersky is better in every category.
panda doesn't like me. for some reason it doesn't like to work. files don't load. the progress bar stops. it will get stuck on a file. no question, it's a great company. it doesn't like me.
if the computer that you're posting with is the same one that you posted the hijackthis, i think you are going to be ok. i'll be looking for your hijackthis, and rooting against the rootkit.

OK, just caught this after work.....

The "programme" thew me, I thought UK, forget U R eloquent. Clearly, I am not about my country right or wrong.....esp given it is beyond unimaginably right, these days, as in WINGGGG.

I went to school in Ithaca....upstate NY is America's best kept secret.....so let us not tell anyone, OK?

No, the Panda is a solitary creature & likes U to the extent it can like any human. It is just endangered is all

And sorry....everyone has trouble with their scans, unlike Trend's Housecall with their delightful choice between Java pluggin and their kernnel....and sorry, Panda is a marketing gimmick, given, when one does get it 2 run, if it unearths something.....it then wants U to buy it.

Kinda like an ER physician willing to diaqnose U have a bullet 2mms from yr heart....and he or she will send U to the OR when you produce your proof of coverage & a platinum card, OK?
My attitude toward Panda: Bite me, OK?

Yes, I now use AOL software for free with my brodband provider....given their over-investment in dialup forced them to offer it free....I like AOL software, will nevah be a part of the arbitrary bashing.....but it is also true that it has a keylogger in its main file!

I know---and pls C attached--- cause I got SnoopFree...and along with one my KB software has....it found and now precludes this, sometimes every minute! I will upload a visual from Snoop log....did this other day in another thread--- and U will be stunned & staggered. At least one of those, OK?

I depend on none of AOL's protective offerings....[i] have my own as U can C from my desktop; both AWC and trend micro run in real time....forget AVG and my firewall.

I sure hope U R right about my HJT log, and thank U so much for even looking, forget caring; yes, same system....my main one.

Jill

jill,
before i gab your ear off, i better tend to the important business first.
you need to bump up your hijackthis. just reply to it with the word "bump". this prevents your log from fading out of view. if i was to do it, they may think that i am helping you with it. i would if i was qualified.
i think it would be in your best interest to check out a sticky at www.techspot.com>security and the web>If your system is infected. Read this before deciding whether to CLEAN or REFORMAT.
i located your hijackthis and i wanted to be cautious for your sake.
what did you mean, aol has a keylogger in it's main file?
what is snoopfree? what does it do?

I know---and pls C attached--- cause I got SnoopFree...and along with one my KB software has....it found and now precludes this, sometimes every minute! I will upload a visual from Snoop log....did this other day in another thread--- and U will be stunned & staggered. At least one of those, OK?

what did you mean by all this? you lost me.
i am keeping an eye on your log, and i also think today is microsoft update day.

e!

Luv U 4 caring.....I will follow up re yur link....but right now, more of me feels I am not infected than otherwise....but I will always live in ferar of that.

Re bumping....I am adverse to bumping.,...which I had to ask the definition of once seeing the word in a thread....and a mod PMed me and explained it.

My take is.....since that post has been seen by several.....if someone had seen something really deadly.....they would have done more formal examination....I get that they kind of TIRAGE in that forum. I could be tripping, but I think maybe not.

Now, one of the ten gazillion things I have learned from being member of this site....forget learned how to DO......IS, there R keyloggers in the most unimaginable places.

Yes, e.g. Logitech Setpoint software! Yes, AOL! U need new KB, you choose one carefully from Newegg, you pay yr money, it arrives, U luv it....thannnn it deluges yr HJT log in ways U evah saw before. You post you learn, you fix, you learn more!

SnoopFree.....is one of the utilities Glas, the mod in Scotland on this site....lists in his signature. I just sensed I needed it. Except I think everone does, OK?

If U look at the day's log I posted above.....U will C the top; 2 entries as they appear every day: Snoop has blocked the illegal B hook in the Setpoint. It itires ony one a boot, then it give up

Thennn.....every two seconds....AOL tries to come in and read myt keystrokes! I mean just look a the times! It's exhausting.

Also very satisfying now....that every time it tries, Snoop bares its teeth and is like "No waaaaay; I am guarding Jillys desktop (also lappy) & I nevah sleep!!!!
that was little dramatization, OK?

And re MS hotfix day.....I dun thin so.....it is Wed.....the hotifixes like to come in on Tuesdays mostly. I C no little gold shield on W taskbar.

Wut R we up to, re these, 76?

Finally, reformatting the furthest thing from my mind.....I am basically asymptomatic. Yes concerned about the rooltkit utilities I do not understand......but I...though no waaaay expert, don't see anything terrible in my HJT log.....and from jump, cause nobody told me not 2, when I found HJT and got it....I used it myself. So if I find a BHO.....I get rid of it, OK?

I put astuff on the ignore list I feel bewlongs there.....I try my best.

So let us all chill untill we get diagnosis.....cause check that forum, there are people bleeding out, OK?

Again TRIAGE..AND have faith in the judgement of the pundits there....I do.

Jilly

ok jill,
reformat just happens to be in the name of the sticky. it's in the forums section of techspot. i forgot to mention that. i am a sticky nut. i try to acquire new IT web sites, just to read the sticky's. when a sticky touches on a subject that no other does, i make a note of it in my mind.
one of the sticky's on this site suggests that you bump up your hijackthis log if it is more than 48 hours old. i was just following their advice.
yeah, today is wednesday isn't it? i forgot that i worked a day that i wasn't scheduled for, and lost track.
hijackthis experts are amazing. i go to several websites and watch them fix up people's computers. i've watched hundreds. it seems like i would know how to analyze them myself by now. they also use tools that delete files by force. they unhide and rehide files and folders. they disable and reenable system restore. lots of times they know an infection is there, and are searching for a way to get rid of it.
when they check your hijackthis log, i will be quietly observing and i won't be in the way.

O! thanks for the important, esoteric rule thingies!!! Very helpful. Truly.

U will nevah B in the way.....I always work to get clear and objective abolut things....including my living in fear of puters getting infected.

And yes, I know U know, there are no words to proplery describe the breadth and depth of wut the HJT pundits accomplish.....no words. I can no longer read the posts.....the collective misery and terror, helplessness, the human suffering and wut just that forum is emblematic of re total trash Windows.....every version....makes little Jilly littler. Also nauseated.

I just felt U were maybe...and this is human, no dissing implied....crossing the fine line between being acuate, caring, sharp and protective....alll amazing thingies....to maybe a little alarmist. That's all. Nobody is expecting anyone 2 B perfect. At least not I.

C? Full, honest commuication rocks, right? Too bad there isn't more of it in the world. Which is why MS still owns the marketplace. And why Mr. Cheney can lie with sociopathic alacrity and impunity---for years, and at staggeringt expense on every level...in AMERICA.....and thought that could go on forevah.

jill,
i am not of fan of bush and cheney either. remember the travesty in florida that got gw in, thanks to his governor brother jeb. lets hope the southerners don't vote jeb in, like they did gw. it will be another eight years of incompetence and corruption. there, i got that out of my system.
when they analyze your hijackthis, i will be chearing jill, jill, and if you post with a question, i might jump in with the answer.
