Win Security Ctr says Norton firewall installed after I uninstalled it

so is it still there?

I want to make sure I don't have 2 firewalls.

After uninstalling NIS, I did a search for all files, including system and hidden, and found a few Symantec folders remaining, most of them empty. After ending a symantic process (forgot the name) using Task Manager, I was able to delete these folders and files.

I've got a 2.4GHz P4, 512Mb RAM running XP Pro, sp2

I'd LOVE to get some help on this

hi tetonbob -- is the name related to the Grand Tetons, grandest mountains I've ever seen (and actually climbed to top!)

I read that post, clicked on the link to get symNRT; window came up with Save to disk or cancel, but the save option was grayed out. Next I did the manual steps as best I could. The last step, where you do a find for symantec yielded different stuff each time, and I was afraid to delete stuff I didn't understand; it wasn't clear to me which files and folders to delete.

what next?

hey bob -- i finally figured out how to use regedit and deleted numerous keys and entries with symantec and norton in their name. Also searched on nis and nav and found a few more that were clearly symantec related.

The only things that wouldn't delete were under system\controlset001\enum\root\legacy_symantec_core_lc plus 9 others
below it.

Prior to all that i followed the directions on the page you linked me to which went smootly once i went to the symantec site and downloaded the removal tool from there.

the Windows Security Center still thinks that i have a norton firewall running and 2 or more AV programs running (i have AVG only, but did trials of several others before uninstalling them). They all seemed to slow my computer very badly as did antispyware, except spybot which i've had for a year without problems.

i feel exactly like your moving icon, thinking maybe this is an opportune time to get a new computer, possibly even a mac! (although, my system works pretty well now with avg and spybot, windows defender and the built in win firewall -- but i don't feel secure without a better firewall. maybe i should hook up that linksys router that was such a headache to configure, my son gave up.

any more suggestions?

Hi Bob -- thanks for your help so far!

Since my previous post I was able to delete all the entries except hkey_local_machine\system\controlset001\enum\root\legacy_symlcbrd. I do NOT have symlcbrd.sys in my system, which is a know symantec component which has caused some people problems.

Also, FYI, I try to keep my system really clean. I never open unknown email attachments, or other unsafe practices. Since purchasing this computer in '03, I've always had NIS running until last August, when I got tired of it's resource hogging, and switched to AVG. I've also had antispyware running, currently Spybot and Windows Defender. I run scans AT LEAST once a month and have never detected a virus or spyware, just some tracking cookies.

I also had a router installed, with it's firewall, up until a few months ago when my son screwed it up and couldn't fix it after many tech support calls to Linksys. I also use Registry Booster, PC Pitstop Optimize, and SpeedUp My PC.

Unfortunately, I just discovered that my son has occasionally visited porn, gaming and other dubious sites, but my antispyware/AV detected anything.

Thanks again, and hope you can still help. I've got a lot of personal stuff on my computer that I want to keep secure.

Legacy keys are nothing to worry about. Shouldn't affect anything. To delete them, you need to take ownership of, and have full permissions on, the key in question.

What issue/concern do you still need help with?

For the Security Center issue still thinking Norton is installed, you may want to ask in the Windows XP forum, where it might get more attention.

Due to the dirty uninstall, there may be some 'Windows Confusion" going on.

Password protect your account (and the account named Administrator), and create a limited account for your son to use. This will hinder his ability to download and run exe files.

Another thought....make sure that there aren't any remnant Norton services, Start>Run services.msc or startups in msconfig

Hi Bob - I tried your suggestions and still can't locate any Norton/Symantec components. I now believe Windows Security Center is giving me bad info. I'll check the XP forum to see if they have any suggestions.

Thanks for your advice and help. It seems that my system is starting faster since removing the Symantec remnants.

On another subject, when I reply, why does the title appear blank, unless I type something in? When replying to an email, the Subject field always stays the same unless manually changed.

I'm going to try leaving it blank here and see what happens.
