Might be spyware/viruses?

My friend's computer can dial up to the internet and can sometimes access a web page or two, but then it goes nowhere. (can't access pages/ping sites/etc) I think it's a spyware/malware prog. or a virus. Ad-aware doesn't find it, neither does Mcaffee.

Are my suspicions correct? If so, I probably don't have a good scanning program. (some people say certain progs catch certain problems.)
