Question Avast! vs. AVG

Which anti-virus software is better? I'm considering reformatting my entire computer so I need to replace my anti-virus also. (It's a very depressing day for me. )

Idea

I used AVG years ago and it was good for what it was, I now use Avast and have no real complaints either, I would say they are fairly comparable to each other, although a pro may be able to give a definitive answer after solid testing, but no one A\V can catch everything, it's probably personal preference at the end of the day between them, but whichever you go for I suggest backing it up with online scans once in a while just to be safe, the big names provide these free such as Trend, Panda and McAfee to mention a couple, give each a try and see what you feel.
