x-cleaner beware....

Hello,

I am seeking assistance with some problems I have encoutered since last downloading the most recent update for x-cleaner.

I had received an email from x-block recommending the update. As soon as I updated I got messages saying that I had an adclicker program (w32/troj.drv). I would remove it, but everytime I would restart my computer, it would be back. none of my other programs could find this: ad-aware, spybot, or Trend- PC-cillin. I tried to remove x-cleaner and at that point realized that I could no longer access my control panel. Everytime I tried to work in my control panel, I got a message that windows explorer was experiencing a problem and had to shut down. (it did not shut down though). And when I try to remove x-cleaner through "all programs to add/remove programs", I get a message that "Wise uninstall cannot open install.logfile".

I then tried to remove x-cleaner manually through safe mode/ edit registry, but could not find it all, it's still there. I did discover that x-cleaner was removing the adclicker program, but evertime I restart, it shows up again. I reinstalled windows xp and all of the updates to present that were relevant.

Now when I restart, x-cleaner finds a new spyware program: Springfield_adv_daemon, although it could not find it in msdart.dll (?). My other programs are not finding this spyware either.

My real player program was also now trying to connect to the internet at start up. Once I removed that I stopped getting messages about the w32/troj.drv.

Finally, I tried scanning my computer with x-blocker's online tool and found nothing, but when I try to remove that by hitting the trash can provided with the download, my computer shuts down! and now that is still there too. The interesting thing is that if I run x-cleaner manually after start up, I get no messages about any spyware at all.

I have contacted x-block about these problems, but they state they do not offer techinical support for their freeware. and their knowledge base section of their website is sparse and irrelevant. I need help removing x-cleaner and getting control of my computer back. I believe that the spyware messages I'm getting are false-positives.

Hope someone can help.....

Hello dbstone:

Please read this thread

Please download HijackThis . This program will help us
determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Double-click on the file you just downloaded. Click
on the "Unzip" button to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:\PROGRAM FILES\HIJACKTHIS\
Run a scan and save the log file. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.
Make sure to include the System information at the top of the log as well.

Post your HJT log in HJT Log Help Forum
and an analyst will help you.

Thanks Fredmh,

I just want to clarify, once I follow all the steps and post the Hijackthis log on the HJT log help forum, am i also posting it here in my thread? Or should I repost all the info I provided here in the HJT log as well? If yes, then do we consider this thread closed?

New and confused

Hi db

You only need to post your log in the HJT Forum. Once you've done that, all the help you need will come from there. Effectively, this thread can be closed.

Hope that helps.
