norton issues

My computer seems to have had its norton anti-virus infected. Live Update no longer functions i keep getting errors that prevent me from updating. What makes this worse is that I am blocked by the virus from accessing anything on the internet related to Symantec or Norton to try to seek tech support from them or to try to manually download the updates from their sites. On top of all this theres other viruses and spyware infecting this machine and lacking the resources to deal with them. Tried other anti viruses on line and nothing seems to resolve the issues.

If you go to http://free.grisoft.com/ and http://www.avast.com/ download AVG Free and Avast and also search for Spbot S+D, which are all free anti-virus and anti-spyware. They should clear up any viruses. Also try AdAware SE.

It's never a good idea to run more than on AV on a system at one time. Real time protection, scanning and monitoring agents in each program can cause system conflict.

You likely have an infection which looks for strings to AV products and disables them, or hinders their ability to operate.

If you require assistance in this, please post a HijackThis log in the HJT Log Help forum for one of our analysts to review.

Please download HijackThis - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
Click on the "Unzip" button to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:\PROGRAM FILES\HIJACKTHIS\

Double click on HijackThis.exe to run the program.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Post the hijackthis.log file in the HijackThis Log Help forum. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

And you'll want to install HJT on the root C:/HJT as I was advised once.

No disrespect, but as I do this every day, and teach it, I think I know how to do this.

As long as HJT is in it's own folder, it's fine. The self extracting version I linked to is from the author himself.
