error404 horror

I seem to be having a problem with my computer. after downloading a codec player to view a video, my home page was changed permanently to a securitysytemsite page. After trying several different things to fix the problem, I now have zero internet capability. any suggestions on how to remedy this situation?

Hi and welcome -

You more than likely have been infected by a smitfraud variant.

Please do this:

Please download HijackThis - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
Click on the "Unzip" button to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:\PROGRAM FILES\HIJACKTHIS\

Double click on HijackThis.exe to run the program.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Post the hijackthis.log file in the HijackThis Log Help forum. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

Thanks for a quick reply, unfortunately the problem is on my home PC. I am currently using my laptop to research and hopefully fix this problem. would it be possible to download the smitfraudfix to cd and transfer to the infected computer?

It's possible to do that, yes. CD, or USB stick.

I'd recommend you first do that with HijackThis and have one of our Analysts review the log. Smitfraud can come bundled with other trojan nasties.

We generally use SmitfraudFix in combination with other tools, depending on what all is present on the system.
