Question Computer safety for Idiots like me.

Hi
Just wondered if my computer is safe using avast! verson 4.7, Ad-Aware SE Personal, Spybot Search and Destroy and TweakNow RegCleaner?
I have no idea what I am doing half the time *shrugs* I just pray that I am safe. Although lately my computer has been acting strangely.
Any information is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Jindarella

If you are concerned about the performance, read this http://www.techsupportforum.com/hija...ijackthis.html and then post a log in the Hijack forum.
The security you have is fine. Do you also have a firewall or just use Windows firewall?

I've got Spyware Doctor, among other solutions and it seems to be OK, but not great.
It was on rebate and has been praised, so I thought I would try it out.
Polished and easy GUI, but a big footprint IMHO. So much so that it is relegated to on-demand scanning duties only on my old PIII 500.
A newer more robust rig would likely handle it fine.

I wouldn't buy it again simply because I feel that I can match it with free/shareware very easily and I don't like its system resource appetite.

If I had to give up my freeware AS/AA array for one paid-for solution it would be Webroot Spysweeper. Aggressive updates, very good support and I have a couple of friends whose infected comps were literally rescued by Webroot.

Regards,
JF

I would not rely on XPs firewall. The XP one does not monitor outgoing traffic - incoming only. So, if you have an infection, it could be sending out your details without your knowledge. A router seems to be preferred by the hardware guys and it will give you an extra layer of protection. Other than that, try one of these free firewalls

Sygate Personal Firewall
ZoneAlarm
Tiny Personal Firewall

Sygate with a router for NAT works extremely well for me.

I recommend you to use Bitdefender Professional Plus, it satisfies my needs of security, as it is an All in One pack (containing a Virus Scanner/Spyware removal tool/Firewall/AntiSpam pack/Program,Dial, HTTP(S) and Script Control etc.

I'm buying the newest release soon

I do extrememy complicated HJT logs on another site, and i can attest to Bit-Defender Pro being very good. Second would be KAV, and F-Secure IMO.

Most A/V's have a quirck or two. Take the Norton Hole, or McAffee's install issues, or F-Secure's uninstall headaches, or Anti-Vir slow DAT releases. You just work around them.

Kaspersky Internet Security 6 :: ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 6.5 :: Panda Plantinum 2006 Internet Security are better than BitDefender and I recommend trying one of them.
