UK government loses another 3 million records

The records of more than 3 million UK learner drivers have gone missing from a firm in the US, the government has admitted.

On the same day that the chancellor of the exchequer, Alistair Darling, updated the House of Commons about the investigation into HMRC's loss last month of 25 million child benefit records held on two CDs, transport secretary Ruth Kelly said that a data security audit in her department had revealed that a US contractor to the Driving Standards Agency had lost a disc containing the records of just over 3 million candidates for the country’s driving theory test.

The records contained on the hard disc included the names and addresses of the test applicants, their telephone numbers and in some cases an email address – but no financial data.

Re: UK government loses another 3 million records

These cases are becoming more common now we're relying on technology to store our personal details, and untrained staff to maintain and secure the data, yet they still want us to accept the idea of Identity Cards which contain ALL our personal details. A hacker's dream come true!

I'm just waiting for the first post to TSF from a government official asking for help. "Encryption? What's that? Backups? Never heard of them."
