did you ever hear of this

My daughters boyfriend had a hand held device that could listen to phone conversations that were in the air. I don’t know about land lines or cell phones. He stood outside my house and we had my daughter make a call from her cordless phone and we were picking up the conversation. He said it bought it at Radio Shack. I don't know what it was called but it sounds illegal to me. He could also change the channels on my TV without using any codes. Does anyone know what this is and is it illegal.
Thanks

Picking up on any private conversation on a phone without consent is illegal (illegal eavesdropping/wiretapping). It is possible to listen in on cordless phones as the frequency they operate on can be picked up from store-bought receivers (like those readily available at Radio Shack). Changing the channels on your TV are possible if you have anything as simple as a universal remote and set it to scan the spectrum until it finds the code itself to operate the TV remotely. This is more of an annoyance than anything else.
