No more Canadian Grand Prix
2009 will be the first time in 43 years that a Formula One Grand Prix will not take place in North America. Personally, I think that this sucks as the FIA shouldn't be giving up on a huge market, 10% of the entire world's population. If they can't stage a race at Montreal, there're some other great circuits in Canada for which to hold the race at (maybe modifying the Edmonton City Center Airport circuit currently used for Indycar). Another idea would be to name it the North American Grand Prix and hold it at various locations in Canada, the US, and Mexico.

Re: No more Canadian Grand Prix
actually there is still some hope.. based on this artilcle from tsn
not sure i can post link so il past: A decision on whether or not to spend government money to retain the Canadian Grand Prix Formula One race is expected to be announced Friday, according to a report in the Journal de Montreal. Officials from all three levels of government recently met with F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone to discuss ways of returning the Canadian race to the 2009 calender. Montreal Mayor Gerald Tremblay called the meeting encouraging and constructive but stopped short of putting a dollar figure on what it will take to bring the race back. The government officials all agree that they would need to find a promoter for the event after Normand Legault's group said it would no longer function in that role. The newspaper mentioned Cirque du soleil founder Guy Laliberte and Montreal Canadiens owner George Gillett as potential investors but a spokesperson for Laliberte has previously ruled out any financial involvement with the race. Gillett is no stranger to motorsports, having been on the board of the former Denver Grand Prix Champ Car event and current owner of NASCAR's Gillett Evernham Motorsports team. He has indicated an interest in getting involved in some form with the Montreal race. http://www.tsn.ca/auto_racing/story/...ry_auto_racing |

Re: No more Canadian Grand Prix
Hey, that's good! At least they're discussing the possibility. I guess we shouldn't cling to any false hopes, though.
Even if they don't hold it in Montreal, maybe they can move it back to Mosport. I would also love to see Watkins Glen hold an F1 GP again, and also Laguna Seca. I don't think the Indianapolis GP was very good, as the track was an oval (for NASCAR and Indycar) at heart and not designed for F1 racing (the banked corners alone says it)l
