Beckham and soccer in the US

What does the LA Galaxy and the MLS expect to happen out of this deal? There is no way the Galaxy will make back the money they are paying Beckham. The MLS will probably see a small spike in interest because of all the attention Beckham brings but I believe eventually it will all fizzle out again.
The US just doesn't care much for soccer. Why should we, most Americans find football way more entertaining. People have been trying to cram soccer down our throats since the 70's. I remember growing up hearing it was the next major sport. I still hear that to today.
Don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with people who like soccer. Soccer is a tough sport with great athletes, it just isn't something I care to watch and most of the US doesn't care to watch it either. Even if the MLS got a dozen more soccer stars I don't think it would do that much good for the league.
One other problem I see for the MLS is... Soccer is not a very TV friendly format. Where football, b-ball, and baseball all have breaks that are used by sponcer for commercials, soccer doesn't have the opportunity for these breaks. This makes it more unlikely that a big network would want to shell out the money to contract the sport for national tv. Sure you can run banner type commercials but it's just not the same as your typical commercial.
There's my little speech for the day on soccer, maybe I'm completely wrong and soccer will someday become a major sport here in the states. I doubt it though but I was wrong about auto racing becoming big so you never know.

Don't you like the statement by Beckham that it's not the money it's the satisfaction of seeing soccer advanced in the USA

Dear TSF,

I cannot believe that you would actually think that Beckahm would move to L.A. only for money and to help out his wife's acting career. Seriously, what kind of athlete would do that?

Sincerely,
Wayne Gretzky

The MLS are not looking for a quick return. This is a long term investment for MLS. The rewards will be repeased in 10-20 years time. Soccer WILL be huge in this country; let's deal with it!

I think Soccer is very TV-friendly.....the idea of the TV is to entertain...nobody is entertained by commercials. It works well in every other country, and yes, the rest of the world also have commercial after commercial, just like here.

NFL, and other US Sports work well with all the commercial breaks becuase the audience is generally rather fickle and doesn't have a huge attention span. Soccer only requires a 2hr slot, compared to the 4 hr required by the major sports in this country. You put the commercials before the game, after the game and at half time.

You heard it here first:

Here's how to get soccer on TV: Commercials on the players!!!

Ah you say, but the action doesn't pause for time outs. Here's my solution: (who ever commercializes it - please give any proceeds to jason to keep TSF running.)

Place a green screen patch on each player's jersey. Say 8" x 8" across his chest and back. Then all the technicians need do is tell the TV computer to replace the green screen with the Bud Light logo and puff! instant ads. Maybe you make it blue or orange to separate from the pitch - the computer doesn't care.

The action continues. We viewers ignore the ads just as we do now. The sponsors see thier ads right on Sir Beckham's chest. Everybody wins...except the Galaxy - NE Revolution all the way...

Thoughts?

Any patent attorneys out there?
