California to withhold a bigger chunk of paychecks

Reporting from Los Angeles and Sacramento - Starting Sunday, cash-strapped California will dig deeper into the pocketbooks of wage earners -- holding back 10% more than it already does in state income taxes just as the biggest shopping season of the year kicks into gear.

Technically, it's not a tax increase, even though it may feel like one when your next paycheck arrives. As part of a bundle of budget patches adopted in the summer, the state is taking more money now in withholding, even though workers' annual tax bills won't change.

Think of it as a forced, interest-free loan: You'll be repaid any extra withholding in April. Those who would receive a refund anyway will receive a larger one, and those who owe taxes will owe less.

Re: California to withhold a bigger chunk of paychecks

I'd feel sorry for the people of California, but they did vote for these guys and ask for all the programs that is driving the state into so much debt. I wonder how long it will take before the state either declares bankruptcy and/or finally cuts some major spending.

Remember, you can't have anything without (someone) having to pay for it.

Re: California to withhold a bigger chunk of paychecks

Governing is easy when times are good. Its a completely different challenge when they're bad.

If you look at the top and bottom tiers of (typical) rankings of POTUS you'll see those who faced and overcame great challenges ranked high (Washington, Lincoln, Wilson, Roosevelt). Those who faced limited challenges are almost always mid-pack (excepting Jefferson and Reagan). And then there are those who just fail (pre-and post Lincoln surrounding the Civil War and those between the WW's).

Re: California to withhold a bigger chunk of paychecks

Not everyone gets to avail themselves of that difference come tax time.
Qualifying for certain credits has been changed, and it does'nt matter how much you have paid in, exemptions have been lowered too. As a single adult male, making under/at $40,000 a year, with no write-offs, I get hosed. Pay in $9,000, get less than $500.
Thanks, Demoncrats.
